The idea for The Globals was born out of crisis. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the world was forced to pause, reflect, and reassess. Life as we knew it changed almost overnight. Classrooms emptied, communities isolated, and educators around the world scrambled to provide meaningful, continued learning in uncertain conditions. In the midst of this upheaval, a vital question emerged: What kind of world are we preparing the next generation for—and what kind of world are we leaving behind? As the pandemic exposed the deep inequalities and vulnerabilities that exist across societies, it also brought forward an opportunity to reconsider the role of education—not just as a means to academic success, but as a vehicle for building resilience, empathy, and awareness. It became clear that education needed to be more than content delivery; it needed to help learners understand the global issues shaping their lives and futures. This was the seed of The Globals. The pandemic highlighted how interconnected our world truly is. A virus originating in one corner of the globe disrupted the lives of billions, regardless of nationality, age, or language. Climate change, poverty, inequality, and misinformation are similarly global in scale and impact. If these are the challenges the next generation will inherit, then education must prepare them not just with skills, but with vision through The Globals.
In practice, The Globals is a dynamic blend of English language learning and global awareness. Students explore each of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals through engaging, level-appropriate activities—reading real-world texts, watching videos, listening to diverse voices, and completing writing and speaking tasks. Each goal culminates in a hands-on project where learners apply their knowledge to raise awareness or suggest solutions. The platform works flexibly in classrooms or independently, with teachers assigning work, tracking progress, and supporting discussions. Learners not only improve their English, they become informed, thoughtful global citizens ready to act.
The Globals has been spreading through a growing network of schools, educators, and education leaders who are passionate about global citizenship and innovative language learning. Initially launched in Turkey, it has been adopted by private school chains and international educators seeking content that combines English with real-world relevance. Teacher training sessions, conference presentations (including ELTons and IATEFL), and strategic partnerships with NGOs like NeedsMap have helped expand its reach. Its flexible hybrid model and alignment with the SDGs make it increasingly attractive to schools worldwide aiming to integrate sustainability into their curricula.
The Globals has evolved significantly since its launch, with new features and refinements based on user feedback and educational needs. Key additions include Globals AI which generates custom lesson activities focusing on reading, writing, speaking and project ideas, which saves time and boosts student engagement. The Discussions section is a moderated forum where teachers post questions and students share ideas, vote on responses and develop digital citizenship. Learners now earn Jupa coins by completing tasks in the platform which can be used to donate to NeedsMap, a charity partner, to ensure that those in need can get educational items, medical items or food items. The content is updated regularly to make it fresh and up to date.
