Teacher-Powered Schools

Collaborative Designed, Student-Centered Learning

Teacher-powered schools are places where educator teams have autonomy and authority to make decisions at their school site in areas impacting student success. Each school does teacher-powered differently because each team has the authority to create unique student-centered learning environments for their student.

Problems have not arisen by themselves, but are the product of circumstances. Only by 'modifying the circumstances' can one disperse the difficulties they create.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

Teacher-Powered Schools (TPS) was launched in 2014 with the goals of highlighting the successes of TPS , & inspiring other teacher teams to take charge in their schools, center student learning, and/or design & run new schools. We build awareness, support teachers, and advocate for power to center around teachers & students in order to improve student learning & improving the teaching profession

What does your innovation look like in practice?

In teacher-powered schools, teachers have the opportunity to design and implement learning programs that are responsive to the unique needs of the students and communities they serve. TPS lead to better and more equitable learning because they tap the energy and brilliance inherent in school communities.
TPS is a win for everyone involved—for students and families who have their needs met; for teachers who want environments where they feel a sense of passion and purpose; for administrators who unlock the full collaborative potential in their schools; and for policymakers who seek to prepare the next generation of young people for a 21st century society and economy.

Overarching from TPS data collection is decentralized decision-making is sound on a cross-national analysis level, and documented as a key lever for positive change at school, district, and national levels. Teacher-powered models are associated with high-performing school organizations & improved student outcomes.

How has it been spreading?

There are more than 150 teacher-powered public schools spanning at least 20 states in the US, serving students from preschool to age 21, in urban, suburban, and rural settings. Teacher-powered is a unique and important idea. At the same time, it is not fully a new idea, but a manifestation of several well-studied concepts, putting into practice much of what research shows to work best for running organizations and making change. Our movement is growing in popularity, but our goals are to understand better what works
in teacher-powered schools, under what conditions, and how to recreate these conditions across the globe. We also must continue making the case for the true power of the teacher-powered movement and add to more research on student outcomes.

If I want to try it, what should I do?

TPS champion organizations and teachers can get involved by learning more about teacher-powered schools, spreading the word in their communities and/or educator networks, and joining like-minded colleagues to start or convert into teacher-powered schools. Policymakers can help create supportive policy frameworks for TPS. Check out www.teacherpowered.org to learn more & sign up for our newsletter
