STEM for Change

STEM for Change: Because Talent Lives Everywhere

STEM for change helps students and student-athletes in marginalized communities build real digital skills and discover career pathways they often never get access to. We combine hands-on STEM learning and UN Sustainable Development Goals with sports, culture, and community so young people can see themselves in tech, not someday, but right now.

I hope to create an education system where every student, regardless of where they live around the world, their culture, or background, has real access to the skills, tools, and opportunities that lead to meaningful futures.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

I created this innovation because students and families in marginalized communities are often overlooked. With the advancement of technology and digital fluency skills, there are not enough programs designed to close the resource gap and provide opportunities for students and families to learn skill development and digital literacy while solving problems in their own backyard. Why does innovation create larger gaps in success for people of color?

What does your innovation look like in practice?

Our program is 8-12 weeks, depending on the cohort of student-athletes. We provide in person, hybrid, or virtual weekly sessions that begin with something as simple as students reflecting on their own experiences. Tying in those experiences to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and prompting students to leverage AI and technology to conduct research on issues or challenges their community/community members are facing. Then we ask students to think about what sustainable tool they can design, create and activate to solve the issue. In the phase of prototyping, students are also learning about design thinking, branding, and algorithms (step by step instructions), exposing them to 21 Century skills. Students then choose their Industry certification pathway, this allows us to differentiate the tools we encourage students to use (AI, Microsoft Copilot, Cybersecurity, Drones). These certification pathways are essential to our program, as it provides workforce development and skills our students can leverage during and after the innovation/program is completed. The entire program ends with students presenting their prototype, and digital portfolios shark tank style to a panel of industry leaders from Microsoft, Pearson, Adobe for Education and stakeholders from their own community.

How has it been spreading?

It's been spreading through social media, my relationships with schools globally, and at conferences. I use my keynotes and breakout sessions to make others aware that this innovation exists.

How have you modified or added to your innovation?

This innovation is modified to meet the needs of ever individual cohort. Recently we've been tasked with creating this innovation to support teacher certification in Nigeria (500 educators) and knowledge of culturally responsive project-based learning. We've taken an innovation created for students and challenged ourselves sto think of all the necessary skills teachers will need to effectively learn how to teach our innovation in their own classrooms.

If I want to try it, what should I do?

You can contact me directly at YaritzaV@mckenziesadventures.com and I can give you access to the asynchronous pathway/LMS we created to ensure that our innovation is accessible to all students around the world, with respect to access to tech, time zones, and travel.

Click on "Login" on the top right
Create a member account
Select the tier you'd like to engage in (from Basic- Asynchronous to Enterprise- Synchronous + multiple cities, locations, and cohorts)
Introduction & Modules
You will first notice a home page/introduction to the course
Read the instruction and then head to "Start"
Each Module is entitled by Week 1-8
1. Watch the short introduction video
2. Explore the interactive activities
3. Practice with hands-on tasks/challenges and real world scenarios
4. Submit your video reflection
Students working asynchronously can complete the modules at their own pace.
Submit Assignments
At the end of each "Weekly" module, there is a submission form that is sent directly to someone on our team. 1. Click "Submit Task" when you finish completing the task for the week.
2. Wait for automatic feedback or coach review.
Track Your Progress
Go to the Home page
You'll see what weeks were completed
Earn Digital Skills Badges
At the end of each pathway, you earn
STEM for Change Completion Badge
Microsoft Powerpoint Badge
Adobe Express for Education Badge
Copilot badge
Finish the Final Challenge
Each Tier ends with a Capstone Challenge
Students design and build prototypes to solve their community issues.
Submit your design link in the LMS and prepare for your Shark Tank Pitch
Shark Tank Pitch
Each student has 10 minutes to present their prototype to a panel of industry leaders. Whether virtual or in person, depending on which tier was selected.
Download Your Certificate & Prepare for your Industry Certification Exam
1. Once all modules and the capstone are completed, you will be issued a certificate of completion.
2. Your next step is to receive your exam voucher, courtesy of Microsoft in Education and Certiport (Pearson Vue)
3. Students can choose to take the exam on their own or with our guidance.
Once successfully completed, students can share their experience via social media and beyond.
