Southold School's Magical Playscape

The Magical Playscape captures the imagination of childhood in ways that promote learning and growth.

The Magical Playscape is a place where outdoor learning meets innovation and engagement. Our students plant & harvest hundreds of pounds of fresh produce each year that is eaten in the school cafe, where children paint on outdoor easels, perform Shakespeare in an outdoor amphitheater, and generally use their creative spirit to grow as children. See our video below.

About the innovation

Experiential Learning That Stimulates the Senses

The Magical Playscape is born out of the idea that the physical environment can serve as a powerful stimulus for children to learn and grow - socially, physically and cognitively. The scents and textures of fresh herbs, vegetables and flowers in a school garden offer a respite to the conventional classroom environment. Children can conduct science experiments, keep track of plant data and learn to appreciate the value of patience and care associated with cultivating tender plant material.

Experiencing Shakespeare in an outdoor stone amphitheater feels as though the performers and audience have been transported back in time. An amphitheater is a place for children to let their imagination run wild with impromptu theatrical performances, pretend play and poetry readings.

Implementation steps

Design the environment based on Childhood Development
The process of implementation for the Magical Playscape begins with a deep understanding of childhood development and playground design.
