Setting The Standard

Building Better Teachers, Shaping Brighter Futures

By 2030, we need 44 million more teachers, particularly in developing nations, where the lack of quality education fuels poverty. Elm Education is addressing this with Setting the Standard, a highly scalable online training program, equipping learners with all the skills of effective teaching, delivering measurable improvements in student outcomes at a fraction of the cost of traditional programs.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

After a career working across the globe in system-level reform, teacher development, and school improvement, I founded Elm Education. Setting the Standard builds on this experience, offering an evidence-based, cost-effective program that trains new teachers and enhances the skills of experienced ones. It ensures students from all backgrounds can gain access to high-quality education.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

Setting The Standard consists of:
 Engaging Videos: Teachers access high-quality instructional content covering effective teaching strategies, classroom management, and student engagement techniques.
 Online Assessments: After each module, teachers complete assessments to reinforce their learning and ensure comprehension.
 Teacher Portfolio of Evidence: Teachers work through a teacher portfolio designed to scaffold their learning and skill development, while providing evidence of impact for school leaders by documenting their application of new strategies, classroom experiences, and reflections on their successes and challenges.
 In-Person and Online Collaboration: Teachers attend school workshops and participate in online forums to discuss their progress, share best practices, and receive guidance from facilitators.

School leaders are also trained to conduct lesson observations to assess impact on classroom practices and to provide immediate developmental feedback.

How has it been spreading?

In 2023, we invited a select group of schools worldwide to participate in the inaugural pilot of Setting the Standard. Following a highly successful year marked by positive feedback from teachers, school leaders, and external reviewers, we have launched the program's second iteration. We are currently engaged in discussions with schools, school groups, and governments across multiple countries to enhance initial teacher training provision and elevate existing teaching and learning standards globally.
