School of Humanity

The School For The World

School of Humanity is an award-winning online school where learners aged 11-18 learn by doing and having a positive impact on the world. We are internationally accredited by the Western Association of Schools & Colleges. Instead of exams, we learn through real-world projects. Instead of memorization, we focus on whole-human development.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

A growing number of families around the world are disillusioned with traditional schooling and actively seeking alternatives. In the U.S., 75% of students say they hate school (Yale study). In the U.K., two-thirds of parents are dissatisfied with the A-level system (YouGov). In short, families are unhappy with how, what, and why we learn in traditional schools.

At the same time, while innovative models of schooling have emerged in some cities, they remain out of reach for most families. This widespread frustration is driving a shift - home-schooling is now the fastest-growing form of education in several major countries, and families are looking for innovative online options that align with their educational values.

School of Humanity offers an accredited, global alternative that’s accessible, forward-thinking, and built for the learners of today.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

At our school, we learn through projects and tackling real-world challenges. Every learner has a personalized curriculum, aligned with their academic goals and interests. We also place significant emphasis on human flourishing and the development of human skills.

Throughout the academic year, learners also participate in internships and hackathons, under the guidance of industry experts. We incorporate a rigorous career and university advisory program in high school as well.

Learners spend half of their weekly schedule in interactive online workshops, while the other half is self-paced. We currently offer two cohorts organized by time zone.

Every learning experience in our school is guided by the curriculum’s explicit set of learning outcomes captured in what we call The Human Literacies Framework.

The eight categories of the curriculum include Discovery, Thought, Society, Flourishing, Creativity, Action, Technology and Quantitative Skills. All our literacies reflect the most sought-after workforce skills, key elements for a fulfilling life, and essential tools for human progress.

Our curriculum is rigorously benchmarked against a range of global qualification frameworks, giving learners the opportunity to prepare for universities and careers that matter to them

These standards, when met, will ensure that learners are truly future-ready.

How has it been spreading?

School of Humanity is licensed as an American online school and is launching learning hubs globally. To date, we serve learners from over 30 countries, across 6 continents. Our sliding scale tuition model and financial aid program have also allowed us to serve learners from a range of socioeconomic backgrounds.

We received our accreditation as an international school from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, and are currently an NCAA-cleared school. SoH is a strategic partner of EiM Global, which led the seed investment round in the school in 2022.

To date, we have won two awards: Best Initiative for Wellbeing at GESS awards in 2023, and Etech Evolving Education awards. We are led by a team of award-winning educators who share a mission of creating a new education system for humanity.

How have you modified or added to your innovation?

Since launching School of Humanity, we’ve grown far beyond the original 9th-grade cohort. We now serve learners from 7th through to 12th grade, with the upper years anchored by year-long interdisciplinary challenges integrated with the Pearson Extended Project Qualification. This gives every learner a rigorous, authentic pathway to demonstrate mastery through real-world learning.

We’ve also expanded downward, introducing a middle school program built around five-week interdisciplinary challenges. Every experience, middle and high school, is mapped to our Human Literacies curriculum, a competency framework we refine on a two-year cycle to stay aligned with emerging needs and future-readiness skills.

To support this model at scale, we built our own digital nervous system: the Voyager platform. It enables us to deliver project-based, interdisciplinary learning with consistency and quality, even as we grow. Voyager is designed to power progressive schooling at scale without losing the human-centred rigor that defines our approach.

Implementation steps

Establish a forward-looking core curriculum
In order to reinvent education, we not only reimagine how we learn, but also what we learn. Our core curriculum, the Human Literacies Framework is informed by the most in-demand skills for the future of work, the requirements to live a life of flourishing, and the needs of human progress. As a mastery-based school, they are the key curriculum standards that our learners work towards.
Design interdisciplinary learning journeys
So how do learners evidence their learning and attain the curriculum standards/credit areas? One of the main ways learners at SoH do this is through embarking on Challenges such as "Food, Energy & Water Security" or "Activism through Arts". These challenges follow the challenge-based learning pedagogy and are mapped to curriculum areas. Learners can also embark on skill-focussed guided projects and evidence learning through real-world learning projects such micro-internships and hackathons
Design for Human Flourishing
Human flourishing sits at the core of our curriculum at School of Humanity. Through weekly flourishing sessions, we guide our learners to develop purpose and well-being in life. Learners are also given the opportunity to design their own personalized journey and receive regular personalized guidance.
Create opportunities for real-world learning
At the end of every term, learners participate in real-world learning week where they either participate in a micro-internship project, analyse an extended case study or collaborate in a team for a hackathon. We partner with pioneering organizations for each of these projects. Learners also receive weekly mentorship from industry experts as they tackle real-world challenges. IN addition, we run masterclasses from global leaders and universities across different disciplines throughout the term.
