Educational community of practice as a resource for change

The project is aimed at building a community of child-centered early-childhood educators who use various forms of offline and online activities to share their practical experience thus helping each other solve challenges they face and grow professionally, improving early childhood education across Russia. This goes in line with Sustainable Development Goal 4.

It's a way to show the local community the most modern, effective and relevant moments of modern preschool education. This is an opportunity to find like-minded people and unite with them.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

The project was created by a community of preschool education practitioners to expand the boundaries of experience exchange, as well as to change the practice of working in kindergartens towards child-centered ECE nationwide. The majority of preschool educators in Russia admit that they have difficulties with transition to a child-centered approach due to lack of practice. We help them!

What does your innovation look like in practice?

The ECE educational community, using the principle of distributed leadership, creates offline and online platforms with the purpose of experience exchange, professional development, studying new methods and technologies, orienting the practice of working in kindergarten towards the child. Community leaders in the regions choose a theme of the school, draw up a program, form a team of organizers, and invite interested educators to participate. The online format of schools taking place in ZOOM allows to invite teachers from all over the country. Participants of regional schools provide feedback, where they describe what specific tools they have started to use and how it helps them in their daily activities. The main value of the project is that any educator can initiate a school on a specific problem, all participants are involved in the process of searching for practical solutions.

How has it been spreading?

In 2020, 27 Regional Schools were held across Russia, organized by 46 community leaders, with a total of 4256 educators taking part. Our aim is to spread the impact to 20 more regions in the course of the next 2-3 years.

If I want to try it, what should I do?

Initiate a regional school. Come up with an issue you want to solve or a topic you want to share with other professionals, choose a theme for your school, draw up a program, form a team of organizers, spread the information among your regional community, and set a Zoom meeting, inviting interested educators to participate. It's all very simple to implement and very powerful in impact.
