Qubee Kids was created because children should not have to leave their language and culture behind to benefit from digital learning. While educational apps have become a common part of early childhood learning, high-quality interactive resources in Afaan Oromoo remain limited. Oromo families, both in Ethiopia and across the diaspora, often have far fewer digital options for helping children learn and stay connected to their language.
We wanted to help close that gap while going beyond language learning alone. Young children need strong foundations in literacy, numeracy, vocabulary, problem-solving, and general knowledge. Qubee Kids brings these areas together in one playful learning environment, available in both Afaan Oromoo and English.
Accessibility was equally important. The app is designed to remain free, work largely offline, and require no account, so children can learn regardless of connectivity or a family’s ability to pay for subscriptions.
Ultimately, we created Qubee Kids so Oromo children can have the same opportunity to learn through engaging technology while seeing their own language, culture, and experiences represented in the learning environment.
In practice, Qubee Kids turns early learning into an interactive world where children learn by listening, exploring, practicing, and playing. Children can switch between Afaan Oromoo and English and develop foundational skills through activities covering letters, vocabulary, tracing, numbers, counting, basic math, colors, animals, the human body, days, months, and general knowledge.
Learning is reinforced through games and structured experiences such as Qubee Math World, where children progress through increasingly challenging math stages; Word Builder, where they construct words from letters; and Qubee Runner, where literacy practice becomes an adventure.
At the center of the experience is Qubee, an animated learning companion who demonstrates activities, gives encouragement, celebrates progress, and helps make learning feel playful rather than instructional.
Children can explore independently and progress at their own pace without accounts or complicated setup. Most content works offline, making Qubee Kids practical for families with limited or inconsistent internet access. Progress is stored locally on the device, and the app is designed to provide a safe, child-friendly environment.
For families, particularly Oromo families in Ethiopia and the diaspora, this means one accessible space where children can develop important early-learning skills while regularly hearing, using, and seeing Afaan Oromoo and Oromo culture represented in the technology they use.
Qubee Kids has grown primarily through organic community adoption and word of mouth, rather than large marketing campaigns. Oromo parents and families have discovered the app through the app stores, social media, recommendations from other families, and sharing within Oromo communities in Ethiopia and the diaspora.
What makes this growth especially meaningful is that much of it happened while Qubee Kids was still a much simpler product. As families continued using and sharing it, we expanded the app from basic alphabet and audio activities into a broader early-learning platform covering literacy, numeracy, vocabulary, general knowledge, and interactive learning games.
Today, Qubee Kids has reached tens of thousands of downloads, with a substantial active user base across Ethiopia and Oromo diaspora communities in North America, Europe, and elsewhere. Its growth has largely been driven by families finding something they were already looking for: an accessible and engaging way for their children to learn while maintaining a connection to Afaan Oromoo and Oromo culture.
We are now beginning the next stage of that growth by strengthening the curriculum, improving the learning experience, and exploring partnerships with educators, schools, community organizations, and other institutions that can help Qubee Kids reach more children.
Qubee Kids has evolved significantly in response to how children and families use the app. It began with relatively simple Afaan Oromoo alphabet, vocabulary, audio, and early-learning activities. As adoption grew, we expanded both the educational scope and the level of interaction.
We added English learning, tracing, numbers, basic math, vocabulary, animals, colors, the human body, and other foundational topics. More recently, we have focused on moving beyond individual activities toward deeper learning experiences. This includes Qubee Math World, a structured 10-stage math journey; Word Builder for literacy and spelling practice; and Qubee Runner, which combines literacy practice with gameplay.
We have also transformed Qubee from a visual mascot into an active learning companion who demonstrates, guides, reacts, encourages, and celebrates with children. At the same time, we have continued improving the interface, audio, offline accessibility, child safety, and progression systems.
The innovation continues to evolve based on a simple principle: keep what makes children want to return, while steadily increasing the educational value of the time they spend in the app.
