We believe a world with more cooperation and less conflict can be achieved by enabling schools and colleges to develop six social-emotional skillsets: communication, open-mindedness, self-control, resilience, problem solving and being realistic. We aim to provide ready-made resources that empower any non-specialist teacher to facilitate impactful social-emotional learning, towards this vision.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

Worldwide, social-emotional skills at age 15 are 30% lower than at age 10. This contributes to declining wellbeing, poorer academic attainment, and a major employability skills gap. We developed the Persona Life Skills platform to help schools and colleges reverse this disturbing trend, using a unique personality insights approach to help young people achieve more positive outcomes.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

There is a causal link between social-emotional skills such as self awareness, communication and perseverance, and improved wellbeing, attainment and employability.

Social-emotional learning is accelerated and deepened with a personality insights approach. Persona Life Skills takes this idea one step further by guiding students to apply personality insights to their interactions with others, as they learn 22 life skills that help them achieve positive outcomes in social, learning and work life challenges.

Our spiral curriculum complements existing Personal Development, SEL, PSHE/SMSC and Citizenship programmes. The platform includes personality and adaptability quizzes, 21 teacher-facilitated modules, and 66 self-directed modules – 38 hours of learning.

94% of students report they learnt how to improve the targeted life skills.

97% of teachers say the platform improves students’ employability and 94% say it improves wellbeing. 95% rate it “Excellent” or “Great” on EdTech Impact.

How has it been spreading?

Our journey began in 2020 with two grants from UK R&D agency Innovate UK, funding the development of our unique personality insights algorithm, user interface, and initial content.

The MVP was tested in the UK, Spain and Malaysia, and we released the Persona Life Skills freemium product in 2021.

Pilots were conducted with 85 schools/colleges in 14 countries, and improvements made to usability, features and content. To date 542 schools/colleges in 46 countries have registered to use the platform, and private schools, state schools and local government have bought subscriptions.

We were a finalist in the Super Connect for Good competition, and a GESS Awards 'Wellbeing' finalist. We have also been shortlisted for WISE Edtech Accelerator, H-FARM FuturED accelerator and Tools Competition.

Implementation steps

Register a free admin teacher account
School/Teacher: Register a Free account at https://persona.education/register. Complete the form using your school/college work email. You will receive a confirmation email with your password immediately.
Sign in and watch intro video
Sign in at https://persona.education/login. Watch the 6 min intro video on the homepage.
Take the Teacher Onboarding training module
This 30-45 min learning module gives you the confidence to teach Persona Life Skills, through understanding the pedagogy, the curriculum, and the student outcomes. You will take the Persona Insights quiz to discover your own unique mix of personality styles, and the Persona Adaptability quiz to assess your adaptability level, and receive growth area suggestions. The structure of the Teacher Onboarding module mirrors student modules, giving you a taste of the student learning experience.
Create Group(s) and student accounts
Set up at least one Group, eg. a class or tutor group. Note the Group code and invite students to create their accounts at https://persona.education/student-register using the code. Students will be signed in automatically the first time. Optionally, invite more teachers to the platform by creating accounts for them, and attaching them to one or more Groups. They will receive their password by email.
Unlock and deliver learning modules
Unlock the modules you want your students to access, at Group level or for individuals. Deliver 45-60 min teacher-facilitated 'life challenge' modules in class (or via blended/online learning). Ask students to take 15-20 min self-directed 'life skills' modules for homework or in allocated time. Or direct your students to follow the suggested learning journey on their homepage.
Check student progress and impact
Use the Groups screen to see modules started/completed by each student, and review their answers/activities. Use the Dashboard screen to see activity levels and self-reported learning impact for each student, groups, cohorts or the whole school/college.
Upgrade to a Paid Subscription for full access
The free version has limited features and content. A Paid Subscription provides full access to all modules and features, including all 20+ teacher-facilitated modules and all 66 self-directed learning modules, Persona Insights, Invitations, Persona Community and Persona Adaptability. Plus, all future added content/features.
