About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

Pencil Spaces was created to solve a clear and growing problem in digital education: most online platforms were not built with students in mind. They’re often repurposed video call tools or generic productivity apps that lack the interactivity, structure, and support that students need to truly engage and succeed in a virtual setting. During the pandemic, we saw educators struggling to juggle multiple tools, with video calls in one tab, whiteboards in another, and file sharing and classroom management elsewhere, all while trying to keep students focused and supported. Students, in turn, were overwhelmed, distracted, and disconnected. We knew there had to be a better way. Pencil Spaces was born from the idea that students deserve a virtual space that is specifically designed for learning: intuitive, distraction-free, collaborative, and accessible. We aimed to centralize the tools teachers and students use every day, while layering in meaningful, personalized support powered by AI, so students could thrive and teachers could focus more on teaching, not tech troubleshooting.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

In practice, Pencil Spaces functions as a complete, cloud-based virtual classroom that integrates everything educators and students need in one seamless space. Teachers create “Spaces” that act as virtual classrooms with live video, audio, chat, and interactive whiteboards. Students can join with a single click, with no downloads or installations required. Within each Space, users can upload files, annotate documents, collaborate on whiteboards, and launch educational tools like Desmos, Quizlet, Kahoot, or Google Classroom directly within the platform. Lessons are automatically saved, giving students the ability to review past sessions and prepare for upcoming ones. What truly sets Pencil Spaces apart is its AI-powered features: a Learning Companion to guide students, a Smart Assistant to help teachers manage sessions, and AI integrations designed to support you throughout the learning process. The platform is inclusive, supporting learners with special needs and offering accessibility features. It’s currently in use across tutoring centers, schools, and learning programs worldwide, with educators reporting improved student focus, engagement, and ease of use compared to traditional tools. Our proprietary technology is tailored for real educational environments and continues to evolve with direct input from our users.

How has it been spreading?

Over the past 1–2 years, Pencil Spaces has grown through word of mouth, strategic partnerships with educators and tutoring centers, and a strong focus on user experience. We’ve reached over 30,000 users globally, expanded our platform to support multiple languages, and launched key AI features including an Autograder, Smart Assistant, and Learning Companion. We've built integrations with dozens of educational apps and platforms, making Pencil Spaces a flexible solution for a variety of learning environments. We also introduced features like breakout rooms, cloud recording, private boards, and analytics to better serve institutional users. One of our proudest achievements is the overwhelmingly positive feedback from educators who’ve transitioned from generic video conferencing tools to Pencil Spaces and noticed immediate improvements in student engagement, lesson flow, and accessibility. Looking ahead, our goals for the next 2–3 years include expanding our footprint in schools, developing more personalized learning pathways with AI, and building deeper integrations with learning management systems and curriculum providers. We aim to be the standard for how modern, student-first virtual learning is delivered.
