About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

Students today face persistent and complex challenges that hinder their academic growth and overall learning experience. Many students find it difficult to develop a routine for studying due to distractions from digital devices, social media, and busy schedules filled with multiple assignments, extracurricular activities, and personal responsibilities. This lack of structure often leads to procrastination, disorganization, and an inability to effectively manage time, making it even harder to form positive study habits that last.

Another major problem is low motivation. With the constant pressure of deadlines, and sometimes a lack of interest in the subject matter, students can quickly lose the drive to learn. This is compounded by ineffective teaching methods that fail to cater to diverse learning styles, causing students to feel disconnected from their academic journey. The absence of personalized learning experiences further diminishes students’ enthusiasm.

Finally, students often do not receive clear, or actionable feedback on their progress. Traditional feedback is usually limited to summative assessments, leaving students unsure about their strengths and specific areas for improvement. Without ongoing, formative feedback, students miss opportunities to learn from mistakes, adjust their strategies, and build confidence in their abilities. This results in repeated errors, underperformance, and a sense of frustration or helplessness about how to achieve better results.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

To help students develop strong learning habits, Pandai offers a wide range of learning tools that cater to different preferences. Features like quizzes, exam practice, online classes, quick notes, and flashcards ensure that students can choose the learning style that works best for them, making study sessions more engaging and less monotonous.

Gamified elements such as quiz battles, coins, rewards, goal setting, leaderboards, and badges transform learning into an enjoyable and motivating experience. These features encourage students to set goals and maintain a regular study routine, turning learning into a habit rather than a chore.

For the problem of unclear feedback, Pandai’s smart analytics provide instant and detailed insights. Auto-grading, scorecards, report cards, and chapter breakdowns show students exactly where they excel and where they need to focus more effort. The analytics also break down performance by thinking skills and question difficulty, giving students a deeper understanding of their strengths and weaknesses.

The AI Study Buddy takes support further by offering personalized learning paths, instant help with Math and reading drills, AI-powered answers to questions, and even subjective and essay marking. This ensures that every student receives tailored guidance and actionable feedback, making it clear how they can improve.

How has it been spreading?

Over the last 4 years, Pandai has achieved remarkable growth and recognition. Its user retention rate soared to 94% and it has made education more inclusive, with 30.8% of users coming from rural areas. The platform’s conversion rate from free to paid users outperforms the industry average of 6%, with 1.5-2x growth in revenue each year.

Pandai has become Malaysia’s #1 education app, and its impact has been recognized by global organizations such as the United Nations Development Programme, Harvard, London School of Economics, MIT Solve, Y Combinator, and the Singapore-based Octava Foundation. Key achievements include a successful pilot in public schools under the Ministry of Education Malaysia, where regular users showed significant academic improvement and increased motivation, as well as the introduction of enrichment modules beyond the curriculum, such as financial literacy and self-help courses. Pandai has expanded regionally and now serves over 1,200,000 students who have answered more than 800 million questions on the platform.

Looking ahead to the next 2–3 years, Pandai aims to further expand across Southeast Asia, localize content for new markets, and introduce advanced AI-driven adaptive learning tools to personalize education at scale. The company is also committed to launching more holistic modules to support student development beyond academics, and to reaching even more underserved communities through its tech-driven, socially impactful approach.

How have you modified or added to your innovation?

Pandai has continuously evolved by actively listening to user feedback and responding with new features and improvements. Over the past two years, Pandai has introduced AI-powered tools like Ask PBot, a personalized study buddy that provides real-time feedback, emotional support, and tailored learning experiences for students, making study sessions more interactive and effective. The platform has expanded its educational resources beyond exam-focused content to include enrichment modules such as financial literacy and self-help, supporting holistic student development.

Pandai has also enhanced its analytics and reporting, offering detailed breakdowns of student performance by chapter, topic, thinking skill, and difficulty level, empowering students and teachers to pinpoint strengths and areas for improvement. The app now supports multiple languages and localizes content for different national curricula, enabling expansion into Brunei, Singapore, and early-stage operations in Indonesia.

For schools, Pandai launched the Pandai@School package, allowing bulk subscriptions, centralized administration, and advanced analytics for teachers and administrators, streamlining digital education at scale. Continuous product development cycles ensure regular updates to content, user interface, and scalability, keeping the platform effective and relevant for diverse learners.
