Target group
We hope to see a world where no child is forced to learn on the floor. With MiDesk, we want to improve focus, academic performance, and school attendance by giving students a comfortable, portable workspace. By empowering learners with dignity and the right tools, we envision an education system where every child, regardless of their background, has an equal opportunity to succeed.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

The MiDesk was created to tackle the lack of proper learning spaces for underprivileged students. Globally, 400 million children, especially in rural areas, struggle without desks, impacting their handwriting, posture, focus, homework delivery and academic success. The MiDesk gives them dignity, comfort, and the tools they need to thrive in their education.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

It is a wheelie bag that converts into a desk and chair. The way that it converts is easier to understand with images, so take a look at our website: www.mideskglobal.com.

What this means is that a child can bring their books to school using a wheelie bag, then once at school the bag can be converted into a desk and chair, that also has a solar powered light, and can study comfortably all day, and then at the end of the day, the desk and chair can be combined again into the bag to be wheeled back home, to enable homework to be done.

How has it been spreading?

MiDesks have been delivered to schools across South Africa, guided by the Department of Education as to where the need is the greatest. We have targeted primary schools as the desks are made to last for the full 12 years of a child's education. As the MiDesks have been seen more, more schools are approaching us directly to be the beneficiaries of donations.

If I want to try it, what should I do?

You'll need to contact us to see a MiDesk or visit a school where the children are using them.
