LIV - Laboratório Inteligência de Vida

place Brazil

Social and emotional learning for all, to better understand ourselves, others, and the world.

LIV is a program that speaks the same language as the students by connecting lessons on citizenship and human rights topics with SEL skills. In 2017, 89% of teenagers in 70 schools chose TV series as the most appealing format. So, we made our own Netflix-style TV series. We didn't believe in a curriculum that wasn't created out of students' interest.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

LIV was created in 2017 with the aim of revolutionizing Brazilian education. Traditionally, Brazilian education was focused on academic skills and university admissions exams. The majority of existing SEL programs were adapted from other countries. LIV innovated by bringing in movie series with Brazilian actors and culture elements along with the best worldwide references in education.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

Most of the existing social and emotional learning curricula struggle to connect with
teenagers - and that is where LIV innovates the most. We ran research with thousands of students and decided to develop our Netflix-style TV series. They are original productions, with script development and diverse casting to allow for the most students to relate with them. Each of the series is designed for a specific age group, connecting teenagers’ daily life issues with the social and emotional abilities we aim to develop. This allows for debate and reflection around current topics such as anti-racism, friendships, bullying, substance abuse, and healthy technology use. The series are episodic and the teacher starts their class screening an episode. All discussions and dynamics take place after the episode is exhibited in the classroom. This is game-changing because students are much more engaged in the moment - and that is why a lot of teenagers point out LIV’s class as the best one.

How has it been spreading?

In four years, LIV has built a structured curriculum, specific for each K-12 grade level, and additional programs such as LIV for Teachers. Throughout the pandemic, we came up with new materials designed for distance learning. Today, we are in 500 schools, reaching 180 thousand students. In 2019, LIV was recognized as an outstanding program by CASEL and by the State of Rio de Janeiro which allowed us to reach 115 hundred more students that year. LIV also contributes to the public debate. We had leaders in world Education such as Morin and Goleman come to our Congress in Brazil. Our talk with Domenico de Masi had over 40 thousand participants. Over the next two years, we want to reach 500 thousand more students, expand the program to other countries and develop a new product, 100% digital.

If I want to try it, what should I do?

Contact our team to define how many students will partake in the program. From there, you can plan when the school will receive the materials and train the teachers. Then, we start lectures with our psychologists and follow-up with the families. Although it is a structured program, we don’t believe in anything static. Everything happens in partnership with the school and local community.
