Language learning involves different types of knowledge, from concrete vocabulary to abstract grammar and language use. These different types may require different forms of representation and interaction, while learning them effectively also requires a meaningful progression from one stage to another. Lexi Explorer was created to explore how these two principles could be brought together in a connected language-learning experience.
It initially focused on concrete vocabulary, using interactive 3D environments to let learners encounter words through objects, actions, and situations instead of isolated word lists.
As the platform developed, this led to a broader research question: how can different forms of representation and interaction be connected as learners move from concrete words toward abstract language and communication?
This research developed into Progressive Abstraction, an approach that explores progression from experiencing language in concrete contexts toward understanding and actively using it.
The research then shaped Lexi Explorer. It evolved into a connected experience where learners discover language through 3D exploration, build sentences, experience grammar interactively, practice contextual dialogue and speaking, and reinforce learning through games.
The innovation is not simply 3D technology, but the deliberate connection of different learning approaches into a progression from experience to understanding to active use.
Lexi Explorer is a browser-based language learning platform built around a progression of different learning experiences and forms of representation.
Learners begin with concrete language through interactive 3D environments such as a city, house, classroom, restaurant, or supermarket. They encounter and discover vocabulary through objects, actions, and situations in the environment, giving concrete words a meaningful context and representation.
The language discovered through exploration then becomes the basis for more abstract activities. Learners build sentences and develop their understanding of how the language works. Grammar is also experienced interactively within themed 3D environments, where learners apply their understanding through challenges that allow them to progress.
The experience then moves toward communication through contextual dialogues and speaking activities, followed by games that reinforce the language already encountered and practiced.
The result is a connected progression rather than a collection of unrelated lessons: learners experience language, understand it, use it, and reinforce it.
Lexi Explorer currently supports Spanish, French, German, Italian and Greek across multiple 3D learning environments, with vocabulary, sentence, grammar, dialogue, speaking, and game-based activities.
Lexi Explorer is currently an early-stage innovation, so its spread is still developing. The platform is publicly accessible online and can be tried directly in a browser without registration, download, or installation.
The platform has been shared through online communities, professional networks, development and design platforms, and direct outreach to people working in language education and educational technology.
At the same time, the innovation has been spreading through research. The original 3D platform led to research into how different representations and learning approaches could be sequenced for different aspects of language learning. This developed into the Progressive Abstraction framework and has informed an initial pilot study, academic work, and discussions with researchers interested in language education and technology-enhanced learning.
This creates two connected paths for dissemination: learners can experience the innovation directly through the platform, while educators and researchers can engage with the learning approach behind it.
The current focus is on expanding access, gathering evidence through research, and developing relationships that can help the approach reach more learners and educational contexts.
Lexi Explorer has evolved significantly from its original form. It began as a simple 3D platform focused on representing and discovering concrete vocabulary through interactive environments. Research into how different forms of representation and learning can support different stages of language development then led to the Progressive Abstraction approach.
That research changed the direction of the platform. Instead of treating 3D exploration as the entire learning experience, it became one stage within a broader progression into increasingly abstract and communicative activities.
Vocabulary discovery was expanded into sentence building, interactive grammar, contextual dialogues, speaking practice, and reinforcement games. Grammar in particular was developed as an interactive experience within a 3D environment, where learners encounter grammatical concepts and apply their understanding through challenges to progress.
Contextual scenarios, such as ordering at a coffee shop and interacting at a bus stop, were also added to connect learned language with realistic communication.
These additions were not simply feature expansion. Each stage was developed to serve a different learning purpose and form of representation while remaining connected to the overall progression from experiencing language to understanding and using it.

Choose a language and enter one of the available 3D learning environments. Explore the environment and interact with it to discover vocabulary, then continue through the available activities to learn abstract words, build sentences, experience grammar, practice dialogues and speaking, and reinforce the language through games.
