We aim to empower students on our platform, helping them build foundational skills and stay aligned with classroom learning. We actively work to bridge the educational gap in Germany. Additionally, our students broaden their horizons through interactions with their tutors and participation in our project weeks. Together, we're fostering educational equity and expanding opportunities for all.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

Lern-Fair was founded by university students in the spring of 2020 under the name Corona School in response to the school closures during the first COVID-19 lockdown in Germany. A 1:1-matching between volunteers and pupils for digital, free tutoring should support families in homeschooling-times. We renamed our organization in 2021 and started addressing underprivileged children and support them.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

Lern-Fair operates through an online platform where underprivileged students can register based on their educational needs, whether it's 1:1 tutoring, group classes, homework assistance, or participation in extracurricular project week workshops.

For 1:1 tutoring, our platform utilizes a custom-built matching algorithm. This algorithm considers factors such as subject, grade level, current wait time, and location to pair students with suitable volunteers. Once matched, both the volunteer and the student receive notifications and are connected for free digital tutoring sessions.

We offer a variety of digital resources and workshops to our volunteers to adequately prepare and equip them for their roles. To maintain safety and prevent abuse, all volunteers undergo a digital interview screening and are required to provide a police clearance certificate.

How has it been spreading?

Since 2020, we've supported over 15,000 children registered on our platform and facilitated even more matches between them and our volunteers.

In 2023 alone, we offered 130 group classes with around 2,000 students participating in total.

Since September 23, more than 200 students have received support with their homework via our homework helpdesk.

While initially only university students could provide tutoring on our platform, we've now diversified our volunteer base. We've even established corporate volunteering partnerships, enabling employees to give tutoring during their worktime.

If I want to try it, what should I do?

Volunteers: Join our cause by registering on our website www.lern-fair.de and booking a welcome meeting. During this session, we'll determine the best way for you to contribute, whether it's through tutoring, group classes, or homework help.

Students: Register on our website and schedule a welcome call. Together, we'll identify which of our offerings best meet your needs.
