Schools still prepare students for work AI already does better. The Learner Mindset Framework develops three human capacities that research shows become more valuable as AI advances: critical curiosity, empathy, and presence. Built through daily classroom practice and grounded in neuroscience, it turns students into conductors of AI who know what questions to ask, who to serve, and what matters.

Right now, most schools prepare students to compete with AI, optimizing for content recall, standardized output, and compliance. These are exactly the things machines already do better than we ever will. I want to see schools develop conductors, not consumers. Students who know what questions to ask, not just how to find answers. Students who understand who their work serves, not just how to complete assignments. Students who can sustain attention through complexity, not just react to whatever notification arrives next. Three shifts. Curiosity treated as fuel instead of disruption. The kid who asks "Why do we have to do it that way?" is showing you the most valuable capacity a human can develop in the AI age. That question should launch an investigation, not a redirect back to the worksheet. Empathy developed through practice, not posters. Students need real relationships across difference and the experience of holding someone else's reality as real as their own. Presence taught as foundational, not optional. When a school in Tampa moved from an F to an A rating, the change started with ten minutes of daily mindfulness. Presence enabled empathy. Empathy enabled connection. Connection enabled learning. The deeper change: education that develops what AI makes more valuable, not what AI makes obsolete.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

For fifteen years, I watched students who didn't fit the system discover they weren't broken. They were curious about things the curriculum didn't cover. They processed differently than the schedule allowed. They asked questions that pulled lessons off track in the most interesting directions.

Then AI arrived, and the gap became impossible to ignore. Schools have been optimizing students for work that AI now does better. Recall, calculation, following procedures. The capacities AI cannot replicate, the ones that actually matter, get sidelined. Curiosity gets labeled distraction. Critical thinking gets labeled questioning authority. Empathy gets squeezed out by testing. Presence gets destroyed by constant task-switching.

I built the Learner Mindset Framework because growth mindset told us we could develop anything, but never told us what to develop. The framework answers that question for the AI age: critical curiosity, empathy, and presence. Three capacities that become more valuable as AI advances, not less. The students who thrive in the next decade are the ones who can investigate, understand who their work serves, and hold conscious attention while AI handles the rest.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

It starts small. Five minutes of presence practice every morning: three breaths, a body scan, an intention. Then a “wonder moment” to open each lesson: students encounter something surprising and generate questions before receiving content. The questions become the investigation roadmap, not the lesson plan.

Throughout the day, students practice listening with full attention. Phone away. No planning the response. They run claim-support-question on every source, including AI output. They use structured question generation to turn their own curiosity into genuine inquiry rather than prompt-engineered shortcuts.

Then there's the passion project. Every student carries an ongoing investigation driven by genuine curiosity, supported by AI partnership. A sixth-grader builds a referee video review system for recess. An eighth-grader runs a financial literacy podcast for peers. The work is theirs. AI extends their reach. Their capacities direct what AI does: wondering, evaluating, listening, sustaining attention.

For teachers, the framework translates into a 90-day personal practice. Five minutes of presence in the morning. One question that genuinely puzzles you, written down. One conversation where you really listen. Small enough to sustain. Specific enough to actually develop the capacities you'll later teach.

How has it been spreading?

It's spread in three concentric circles, each slower than the last and each more important than the previous one.

The innermost circle is my own practice. I sit in my car for ten minutes every morning before walking into school. The students see it. The teachers see it. Nobody can model what they don't live, so the work begins there.

The next circle is the schools I work with. You can easily build the framework into how teachers teach and how students structure their day. Wonder moments. Passion projects. Daily presence practice. Genuine listening.

The outer circle is the field. The spread is honest because the framework is honest. It develops slowly, but it develops in people who keep practicing, not just in slides and binders.

How have you modified or added to your innovation?

Two changes have shaped the framework as it's developed.

First, the order of the capacities matters. I originally introduced critical curiosity first, because it felt most academically familiar. But teachers and students struggled with it. We were trying to think clearly while reactive, fragmented, and exhausted. So presence became the foundation. Without conscious attention, the other capacities don't take root. The 90-day program now starts with presence practice on day one.

Second, the practices became less like protocols and more like invitations. Early versions handed teachers detailed scripts. The scripts produced compliance, not capacity. So I rewrote the practices as starting points teachers adapt to their students, their classroom, their own honest capacity in the moment. The work develops through experience, not step-by-step performance of a method. That single shift made the difference between training that fades and practice that grows.

If I want to try it, what should I do?

Start tomorrow morning. Not next semester. Not when you've finished training. Tomorrow.

Pick one capacity. Just one. If your attention feels fragmented, start with presence: three breaths before you walk into the building, before you check email, before the day begins managing you. If your students feel like data points rather than people, start with empathy: five minutes of listening to one student with full attention, no planning your response. If you're moving on autopilot through your curriculum, start with critical curiosity: a wonder moment to open one lesson tomorrow, where students generate questions before you deliver content.

Do that one practice every day for a week. You will forget some days. That's normal. Notice what shifts when you do practice and what feels harder when you don't. Then add a second practice.

Implementation steps

Start with your own practice
You can't teach what you haven't lived. Begin with ten minutes a day for yourself. Three breaths before checking your phone. One question that genuinely puzzles you, written down. One conversation where you really listen, no planning your response. Do this for two weeks before introducing anything to students. Their nervous systems entrain to yours. The work begins with you.
Open the day with presence
Add a 3-minute presence practice to start each class. Three breaths. A quick body scan from feet to shoulders. An intention for the day. The first time you try this, students will giggle and look around. By week two, they'll remind you if you skip it. The goal is not stillness. The goal is conscious arrival before anything else happens.
Run a wonder moment before content
Before delivering any new material, give students two minutes to encounter something puzzling: a strange image, a counterintuitive fact, a phenomenon that defies expectation. Then ask: what do you notice? What do you wonder? Their questions become the lesson roadmap. Curiosity activates before content lands, instead of compliance arriving first.
Build genuine listening into the day
Pair students for two minutes. One speaks about something that matters to them. The other listens with full attention, no interrupting, no planning a response. Then they reflect back one thing they heard. The pause forces real attention because you can't reflect what you didn't hear. Run this daily. The shift in classroom culture from week one to week four is observable.
Pair the capacities through real investigation
Once each capacity feels familiar, pair them. Students choose a challenge that matters to them and affects real people they can talk to. Empathy guides who they listen to. Curiosity guides what they investigate. Presence keeps them focused through complexity. This is where the framework stops being three separate practices and becomes one integrated way of working.
Bring AI in as a partner not as a shortcut
Only after the capacities are built do you introduce AI as a partner in student work. Their curiosity finds the question. Their critical thinking evaluates what AI returns. Their empathy ensures the work serves human needs. Their presence catches when AI pulls them off track. Without the capacities, AI becomes a shortcut. With them, AI becomes amplification.
