About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

I believe that a school should have the necessary resources to equip learners and climate with lifelong knowledge and skills that would prepare them for a sustainable future. I embarked on the project of transforming a classroom into a modern and functional library in alignment with UN SDG 4 and global best practices, promoting a culture of reading and providing enhanced educational opportunities.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

The Labasco Library Hub is a vibrant and conducive academic environment that fosters literacy and whole school learning. The Hub has conducive reading furniture with welcoming academic posters and colourful indoor plants such as the snake plant planted in tyres as means of sustainable practices. There are also book shelves that accommodate wide range of textbooks and novels to enhance the culture of reading habits in the school. To further integrate Sustainable Development Goals into the school, I designed a captivating display featuring the 17 SDG logos and a visual artwork promoting inclusive efforts to preserve the planet. The artwork was recognized on a UN-sanctioned day by Compass Education. I also developed a 12-point Climate Action Pledge, encouraging students to adopt eco-conscious behaviors. This initiative has fostered collective efforts within my school to achieve the SDGs.

How has it been spreading?

The library hub is achieving its aim as students in large numbers visit the library to engage in personalized reading and academic reading. This indicates the library has created a high level of interest in reading and learning A number of the school staff members also visit the library for study and research. To enhance the habit of reading culture, students also borrow books to take home and return after reading. This has greatly improved the reading habits in the school community. The library hub is fostering the love for reading, encouraging academic achievements among students and teachers in the school.

If I want to try it, what should I do?

The library hub is situated within the school. Our school is a public secondary school owned by the Lagos State Government. The name of the school is Lagos Baptist Senior Secondary School, Orile Agege. It was established on 8th May, 2008. It's situated at 2-3 Old Ota Road, Lagos Abeokuta Expressway, Orile Agege, Lagos, Nigeria.
