Kriya - experience to tranform learning

place India + 2 more

Enable every Indian child the joy of discovery through learning science experientially.

In an exam-centric system, where rote learning predominates and overburdened teachers have little leeway to innovate, Kriya offers a holistic solution that combines hands-on learning, teacher empowerment, provision of adaptable low-resource materials, and sustained support through a network of coordinators to build lasting impact.

Kriya envisions a systemic transformation in science education where every classroom nurtures curiosity, inquiry, and deep understanding through experiential learning. The aim is to empower teachers as catalysts of change and cultivate generations of learners who think scientifically, question meaningfully, and learn by doing.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

India’s education system faces entrenched challenges, and science learning suffers from abstraction, rote methods, and weak conceptual foundations. Students often disengage from science despite rising enrolment in the Grade 10–12 science stream; this interest rarely translates into research-focused science degrees, limiting the country’s innovation potential. Yet scientific thinking—enshrined as a Fundamental Duty—is essential for inquiry, problem-solving and national development. Recognizing this, Kriya aims to transform how science is taught and learnt, fostering a strong scientific mindset that can address complex societal challenges.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

The Kriya Program, developed by Prayoga Institute of Education Research, is a proprietary curricular, teacher development, and educational intervention initiative designed as a five-year longitudinal study, now in its third year. Centered on the principle that effective pedagogy depends on empowered educators, Kriya includes a structured in-service teacher education program comprising fifteen experiential workshops based on a backward design model. These are reinforced through continuous, mentor-led support involving planning, classroom observation, and reflective dialogue, ensuring lasting transformation in teaching practice. Aligned with the NCERT syllabus, Kriya reimagines content through hands-on, learner-centric pedagogy supported by proprietary student workbooks and equipped “lab stations” that provide all necessary materials irrespective of school context. Technology integration further deepens access to complex scientific concepts. Kriya’s impact is systematically evaluated through defined tools that measure competencies and track measurable growth in teaching effectiveness and learner outcomes.

1. 21.51% gain in student competence
2. Positive shift in student engagement (qualitative data)
3. Increased enrolment to government schools (4%)
4. Improvement in Teacher Competency (qualitative data)

How has it been spreading?

Increase in number of teachers: 250+
Increase in number of schools: 66+
Increase in number of students: 10,500 and counting
Increase in number of Academic Coordinators: 35
Increase in number of lab stations provided : 150+

If I want to try it, what should I do?

Schools can partner with Prayoga through a 5-year MoU to implement Kriya. They appoint a coordinator, train science teachers in experiential learning, and work with Prayoga’s team to integrate these methods into the curriculum. Teachers join once their school is enrolled, attend professional development workshops, and receive continued mentoring support. Schools can reach out to Prayoga’s outreach or programme coordination team.

Implementation steps

Kriya Implementation
To implement Kriya, schools first sign a 5-year MoU with Prayoga to formally begin collaboration. The process starts with teacher training through intensive experiential learning workshops. Teachers then apply the methods in classrooms using Kriya’s hands-on materials and student workbooks. Academic coordinators provide ongoing mentoring, support lesson planning, and monitor classroom implementation to ensure effective adoption.
