Kinia creates inclusive, creative tech learning environments so all young people, especially those from underserved communities, can develop the skills to thrive in a digital future. We believe technology should be shaped by a diverse generation of developers, and we empower youth to become confident, creative contributors to an equitable digital world.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

Our innovation focuses on delivering inclusive, future-ready Digital and STEM learning opportunities to communities that face systemic barriers to participation, particularly those marginalised by socio-economic disadvantage, rural isolation, gender inequality, cultural and linguistic diversity, and membership in the Traveller and Roma communities.
Our programmes are designed to develop digital skills, spark STEM interest, and build pathways to emerging career opportunities, particularly in underserved settings. We work with over 900 DEIS (disadvantaged) schools, rural youth groups, and community organisations to deliver practical, hands-on learning experiences, often enhanced by emerging technologies including AI. In these settings, students face significantly lower educational outcomes and are underrepresented in digital and STEM career pathways.
We also tackle Ireland’s gender gap in STEM (one of the highest in the EU) by fostering inclusive, stereotype-free environments that support girls' engagement. In Gaeltacht and culturally diverse areas, we align with national targets to increase digital participation and employment. For Traveller and Roma youth, where secondary school completion rates are just 13%, our tailored supports help close critical opportunity gaps.
Kinia’s work ensures that digital progress is shared equitably—preparing all young people, regardless of background, for a future shaped by AI and technology.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

Our innovation is rooted in co-creation with schools, youth services, and local organisations in marginalised communities. This ensures programmes are relevant, culturally responsive, and grounded in real-world opportunities. We overlap in formal and non-formal learning spaces to ensure a whole of community based approach.

We run hands-on, bilingual (English and Irish) Digital, STEM and AI Literacy professional development courses for educators. Programmes build both technical and transferable skills through engaging, project-based learning.

Young people earn Kinia Digital Badges, micro-credentials aligned with curriculum and key digital and STEM competencies. These badges provide recognition, boost confidence, and support progression into further learning or digital careers.

Kinia also trains educators and youth workers through our Certified Educator Programme, a CPD-accredited pathway that builds capacity to deliver inclusive digital learning. This ensures long-term impact within each community.

Our model is driven by inclusion, equity, and sustainability. By working in partnership with communities and designing with (not just for) those we serve, Kinia ensures all young people have the skills and support to thrive in a digital future.

How has it been spreading?

Rooted in co-creation with communities, our work continues to scale through shared ownership, strong networks, and sustainable growth. Our model is growing through a sustainable, partnership-driven model that combines public funding, philanthropic investment, corporate support, and earned income. We collaborate with statutory funders, corporate and philanthropic foundations, and operate a social enterprise model that delivers paid training and services, generating unrestricted income to reinvest in innovation and reach underserved communities.

A key driver of scale is our network of regional delivery partnerships, which enable us to localise programmes and respond directly to community needs. Each year, we reach approximately 2,700 educators and support over 500 schools and youth services across Ireland hitting a 90% impact target representation.

Our CPD-accredited Kinia Certified Educator Programme equips teachers and youth workers to deliver inclusive, high-quality Digital and STEM learning, creating long-term capacity within their own settings. Learners earn Kinia Digital Badges aligned to key competencies, offering recognition and progression pathways.

How have you modified or added to your innovation?

Kinia continuously evolves its innovation in response to emerging technologies, community needs, and national digital transition goals. Initially focused on basic digital skills, our programmes have expanded to include AI literacy, robotics, coding, and creative technology, ensuring relevance to future career landscapes.

To support inclusive learning and clear progression, we’ve strengthened our Kinia Digital Badges system—recognising learner achievements and aligning them with core digital competencies. Our CPD-accredited Kinia Certified Educator Programme has been adapted for hybrid delivery and now includes modules on inclusive digital pedagogy and supporting underrepresented learners, including Traveller and migrant youth.

We’ve expanded regional delivery partnerships to localise our impact and respond to specific community contexts. In parallel, we’re developing sector-specific innovation: building on our Green Tech programmes, Kinia will launch a Hydrogen Education Skills programme in 2025. This will equip young people with foundational knowledge and practical skills in hydrogen energy, aligning with Ireland’s climate goals and emerging green economy opportunities.
