iLearnabout is a new initiative of the iAfrica Foundation, a UK-based charity delivering education, conservation, and livelihoods projects in rural Africa. Our approach blends connectivity, renewable energy, and educational technology to improve lives.
We identified a critical gap-there was no widely available digital resource dedicated to environmental, climate, and conservation education for children across Africa.
Many NGOs were duplicating fragmented efforts, often wasting scarce time and resources, while schools lacked quality e-learning materials.
Yet, children learn best when content is interactive, exciting, and engaging. Digital tools can spark curiosity, improve learning outcomes, and support teachers with better resources, pedagogy, and data-driven insights.
iLearnabout was created to fill this gap. It provides free, high-quality, and impactful digital conservation education -equipping schools and communities with the knowledge and skills they need to protect their environment. By investing in Africa’s children, we invest in a healthier planet and a more sustainable future for all.
iLearnabout delivers a comprehensive e-learning programme of environmental conservation topics, developed by educators in consultation with conservationists. It is usable on and offline via mobiles, projectors, tablets, and laptops, targeting the upper Primary, lower Secondary age group to be taught in after-school clubs.
Six interrelated key themes reflect the SDGs: Climate Action, Living Sustainably, Financial Literacy, Clean Water, Living Things, and Living with Wildlife , within 24 topic packs. Topics include biodiversity, pollution, climate change, conservation, eco-tourism, financial literacy, and more. There are 3 or more learning modules per topic, 74 in total. These include extra resources such as challenges and practical projects. Teacher training is provided.
The framework follows a three-step pedagogy:
Awareness: Narrated interactive modules with photos
Understanding: Quizzes and activities to consolidate knowledge
Action: Real-life challenges for skill building
It is modern, fun, and free of charge
Due diligence and testing were conducted with organisations and education authorities across Africa. A pilot study in Kenyan schools showed great results. Based on feedback, 10 topics have been developed and are now in constant use by a growing number of partners and schools. More topics will be introduced this year.
iLearnabout currently reaches over 45,000 African children, though NGO partners and schools such as Wildlife Clubs of Kenya, with 5,000 after-school clubs, and others in Kenya, Malawi, Namibia, Sierra Leone, South Africa and Zambia. The programme is also hosted on global platforms such as UNICEF’s Passport to Earning, Internet in a Box and Critical Links giving access to hundreds of thousands more.
Even in Nepal, an organisation adopted iLearnabout for conservation education, as there were no similar resources.
Demand continues to grow as more schools request to join.
By developing and providing this programme free of charge to NGOs and schools we are easing the pressure on education provision in Africa , filling a vital gap . We are constantly marketing and announcing the availability and accessibility of iLearnabout and welcome new users and learners, helping with training and advice. We also work with NGOs who may want to apply for funding through their contacts and grants etc using iLearnabout as an innovative catalyst for them getting more support.
We ask partners for which topic /materials they would like developed next from the agreed range, so that they get the most relevant materials. We also adapt in line with curricula and urgent issues, so content is constantly up to date.
