We found a lack of high quality resources to help teachers deliver composing in the classroom. So we created an online tutorial platform which balances a structured approach with opportunity for creative freedom. Each course has a bespoke model composition, broken down lesson by lesson, to enable students to observe the compositional process and create their own music with confidence.
I Can Compose is an online platform for classroom music teachers and their students. Users can log in to the site, choose a composing course through using the filters (technical, style & genre etc) and work through the content at their own pace, which includes practical tasks on instruments, videos, exemplar listening, composition examples with score and audio, and interactive quizzes.
I Can Compose is versatile. Teachers can use the materials to inform their own planning or sign students up to the 'Classroom Access Plan' enabling whole classes to work in different musical styles simultaneously. They can seamlessly work in school and at home, keeping track of their progress through the personal dashboard. On completion of each course, students receive a certificate and badge. Technical courses focus on compositional techniques, which can be applied to any types of music and complement the 'style and genre' courses.
Word spread about I Can Compose during the Covid-19 pandemic when students from around the world used our free courses as part of their home learning. We currently have students from 9 different countries learning to compose using our platform.
Head to our courses page and sign up for our free taster course: 'Composition - how to get started' where you can try out the content and format of our courses. Our free Inspiration page is a library of diverse pieces of music to get you inspired to compose!
