Horizon Academic Research Program

The oldest 1-on-1 research program for high schoolers in the world, founded by Columbia researchers.

The Horizon Academic Research Program (HARP) bridges the gap in high school education by offering students the opportunity to engage in university-level research. Through personalized mentorship from professors and PhD candidates, students develop critical thinking, writing, and research skills—preparing them for academic success and setting them apart in college admissions.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

We created HARP to provide high school students with a platform to engage in rigorous academic research and develop skills that will serve them throughout their academic and professional careers. As students face increasing competition for college admissions, research experience sets them apart. More importantly, research fosters critical thinking, problem-solving, and perseverance—skills that prepare students for the future.

HARP also addresses the lack of structured, high-quality academic mentorship for high school students, empowering them to explore subjects they are interested in and guiding them through the research process.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

Students begin by choosing a research topic with guidance from their mentor. Over the course of the program, they attend weekly meetings, submit drafts, and receive feedback on their progress. They are given tools for academic writing and research methodology and are expected to produce a research paper of publishable quality.

Throughout the program, students are supported by a team of experienced mentors, program managers, and writing specialists, ensuring they stay on track. The culmination of the program is a final presentation of their research, and some students also submit their papers to journals or conferences.

How has it been spreading?

We have had over 1000 students from 45 countries do the program so far. They come from public and private schools, do research in everything from engineering to history, and go on to some of the world's top universities. We'd love for you to join them!
