About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

Hodari was created to address the pressing need for high-quality, culturally relevant, and accessible learning resources for teachers using the new Competency Based Curriculum in Kenya. Hodari closes the opportunity gap by reducing teacher workload using A.I. interventions while providing learning resources they can use to create positive learning engagements and improve student outcomes.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

Hodari is a mobile app for Kenyan CBC teachers that uses AI and personalized learning journeys to support professional development and automate tedious processes. Teachers use it to input a wide range of data daily as required to support student monitoring and learning including student performance data and data on student well-being. There is evidence that such a solution works. Hodari has a wait-list of 18,081 teachers and is working with Nairobi County, the Kenya Primary School Headteachers Association, and Teach for Kenya. It has also partnered with external researcher to further advance the field of learning science. Hodari also uses advanced technologies like machine learning and AI to support personalized teacher development and provide region-specific lesson plan resource suggestions. The app also has a user-friendly data collection and analytics user interface to provide teachers with insights into student learning patterns. Hodari use Kenyan Curriculum content from KICD.

How has it been spreading?

Some main achievements for Hodari over the last 1-2 years has been expanding our reach to more schools and teachers across Kenya, integrating our machine learning feature to personalize teacher development, and successfully partnering with Nairobi County and the Kenya Primary School Headteachers Association to implement Hodari in 23,624 schools. Our goals for the next 2-3 years would be to continue expanding our reach throughout Kenya to reach 44,722 schools, establishing partnerships with more educational organizations and government bodies, and continuously improving Hodari's features and functionality to better meet the needs of teachers. We also hope to have a strong evidence base demonstrating Hodari's impact on student learning outcomes and teacher professional development.
