About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

KVC has noticed that in Kakuma refugee camp and neighboring schools, children are not given this opportunity and therefore it is a problem that needs our attention.
Having conducted Social emotional training with parents in for a couple of months now, we came to realize that children have a greater need of being involved in such club activities to enhance their teamwork and problem-solving skills

What does your innovation look like in practice?

The activities after school increase their creativity which involves using technology and tools rather than using this time to roam around or engaging in risky activities which might result in drug abuse or dropping out of school.

How has it been spreading?

Moreover, after making a game with wood they can sell it to other children in the camp instead of ending up in child labour or with mental health problems. The goal of a Makerspace is to empower students to see themselves as inventors, builders and creators. It gives them a place to learn new skills through trial and error, experiencing failure of an initial idea, the exploration of possible alternatives and then problem solving to improve on the idea. It develops self-confidence and an appreciation for the learner’s own ability to imagine, develop and build projects
