This leads to children feeling disconnected from the language. With very little exposure to English at home or in their immediate surroundings, language acquisition becomes even more challenging.
76% of grade 5 students in government schools cannot read a simple English text. This stark statistic reflects a deep educational divide, with many children unable to access opportunities due to their limited English proficiency. English is critical for career advancement, with 85% of employers stating it’s essential, and 95% of STEM courses being offered in English. Children in rural and underserved areas face even greater challenges. This creates a cycle of exclusion, where children feel powerless and teachers, despite their best efforts, lack the tools and support needed to bridge this gap.
Enjoy English was created to solve the challenge of making English learning accessible and relevant, bilingual, AI-driven, contextualised learning. By using culturally relevant content and local stories, we ensure that English learning is not a distant, abstract concept but something that resonates with students’ lived experiences. By addressing the fear that many children face when learning English, we aim to transform their learning experience and provide them with the tools they need to succeed, both in education & in life.
A day in the life of an Enjoy English user is vibrant, engaging, and full of discovery. As students arrive in class, they are greeted with their own tablets, each pre-loaded with the Enjoy English app. The teacher starts the day by selecting the learning modules, which are tailored to the class's needs and progress. These modules are interactive and rooted in local stories, making the content feel relatable and personal to the students.
Once the lesson begins, children dive into bilingual, story-based activities that reflect their own experiences. They explore English through games, conversations, and activities that allow them to practice speaking, listening, reading, and writing in a fun, judgment-free space. As they engage with the content, the app’s AI-powered speech recognition listens to their pronunciation and provides immediate feedback, allowing children to fine-tune their skills and gain confidence.
The teacher, who might not be fluent in English themselves, uses the structured lesson plans provided by the app to guide students through the lesson. The app also offers in-app professional development, helping teachers build their skills in real-time. This seamless blend of technology, teacher support, and culturally relevant content makes Enjoy English not just a tool, but a transformative experience.
Enjoy English has been on an exciting journey of growth and transformation. We first began by exploring a facilitator-led model in five GCC schools, with dedicated Madhi-led facilitators guiding both students and teachers through the learning process. This hands-on approach helped us refine our content and understand the unique needs of classrooms on the ground. As we gained insights and momentum, we shifted to a more sustainable teacher-led model, which has proven to be highly effective.
Today, Enjoy English is making waves in 198 schools across Tamil Nadu, bringing the joy of language learning to hundreds of children in underserved communities. Our teacher-led approach, combined with AI-powered tools, is giving educators the confidence to lead their students in a way that’s both engaging and effective. By 2030, our vision is bold: we aim to reach 500,000 active learners across the state, creating a massive ripple of positive change in classrooms.
But we’re not stopping there. As we continue to grow, we’re also testing the waters in affordable private schools, doing a product-market fit to understand how we can further expand our reach. We want every child, regardless of background, to have the chance to unlock the power of English and embrace a future full of opportunities
Since its inception, Enjoy English has undergone several impactful modifications to enhance its effectiveness. One major addition is the integration of AI-powered speech recognition, which provides real-time feedback on pronunciation, enabling students to improve their speaking skills confidently without fear of judgment. This personalised, interactive learning is a key differentiator.
We are also expanding access by building a web app, reducing reliance on tablets and allowing schools with limited tech resources to use existing smart classroom setups like computers and projectors. This has opened up the possibility of reaching remote areas with a low-tech smart classroom model, ensuring that even in the most under-resourced regions, children can benefit from quality English learning.
To empower teachers, we’ve introduced in-app professional development modules. These help educators, even those with limited English proficiency, enhance their digital skills and teaching practices at their own pace, ensuring they can confidently facilitate lessons and provide the best support for their students.
In addition, we’re constantly expanding our content library to include more local stories that resonate with students’ lives. These stories not only make learning more relatable but also work to challenge stereotypes, fostering a more inclusive and empowering learning environment for every child.
