There have been times when I have felt stagnant and unfulfilled. When those feelings persisted, I started asking myself how I might best put to use my passion for motivating others. Why wait until someone is struggling with these issues to help them? Why not take a leadership role to instruct them so they can be equipped with the confidence and knowledge they need to make solid life choices?
Empowering Confident Youth is a social-emotional learning, or SEL, curriculum structured around CASEL’s Five Core Competencies, guiding students through self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making, as well as our own Key Pillars for developing an entrepreneurial spirit. We provide a new perspective on a traditional SEL curriculum by taking students on a journey of self-discovery and giving them the tools they will need to overcome obstacles, set goals, and accomplish their dreams.
What makes Empowering Confident Youth unique and impactful is that the curriculum uses questioning as a key component of the learning process. Meaningful peer-to-peer and peer-to-instructor dialogue stimulate critical thinking while growing students’ social awareness and relationship skills.
We have plenty of evidence to show that it works. We successfully completed piloting the program with a high school and the YMCA of Central Massachusetts.
A pilot administration of a novel social-emotional learning (SEL) and leadership development program, Empowering Confident Youth, was completed with 128 ninth-grade students at the Regional High School in Holden, Massachusetts. A survey conducted after the program concluded that students developed better interpersonal skills, demonstrated improved communication, and felt a boost in their self-confidence.
These results demonstrate that students desire a program that helps them grow socially and emotionally, and the program helped them identify what strengths they possess (along with areas in their lives that could be improved). Through the Empowering Confident Youth curriculum, students were able to connect with their counselors and develop a framework to build upon their strengths.
