About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

We created EduReach to address persistent challenges facing education in the Global South, where students and teachers often struggle with limited classroom space, scarce learning materials, and long travel distances that prevent teachers from being present consistently. These barriers lead to interrupted learning, unequal access to quality education, and reduced opportunities for students to develop critical skills, values, and knowledge that can contribute to societal change.

EduReach was designed to ensure that no student is left behind, regardless of their location or the availability of physical infrastructure. By delivering textbooks, lesson plans, and teacher guides digitally to tablets, the platform allows students to access learning anytime and anywhere. Community learning hubs provide additional support for students in remote areas, while data-driven teacher scheduling and remote teaching capabilities reduce travel burdens, ensuring teachers can reach more students effectively.

Beyond academic outcomes, EduReach integrates lessons on social responsibility, peace education, gender equity, climate action, and social justice, fostering learners who are not only knowledgeable but also socially conscious. The innovation empowers teachers to adopt flexible, inclusive, and interactive teaching methods while promoting equity, digital literacy, and lifelong learning.

By combining technology, community engagement, and evidence-based pedagogy, EduReach transforms education

What does your innovation look like in practice?

In a typical rural or urban school using EduReach, classrooms are no longer limited by physical space or paper resources. Students sit in small groups with tablets preloaded with digital textbooks, interactive lesson plans, and multimedia content. Teachers can deliver lessons live via video or assign pre-recorded modules, ensuring students continue learning even when travel or staffing challenges arise.

Community learning hubs supplement classrooms by providing safe spaces equipped with tablets and internet access for students who cannot attend school daily. Local teaching assistants or volunteers help facilitate learning in these hubs, while the teacher monitors progress remotely and provides guidance through the platform.

Teachers use EduReach to plan lessons efficiently, access digital guides, and track student engagement and performance. The platform allows for adaptive learning, so students can progress at their own pace, revisiting difficult topics or exploring extensions for advanced learners.

Beyond academic content, lessons integrate societal-change topics such as climate action, peace education, gender equity, and social justice, encouraging students to apply learning in real-world contexts. Students might collaborate on projects to improve their community, conduct research on local environmental issues, or create awareness campaigns on inclusion and equity.

In practice, EduReach transforms schools into flexible, connected, and interactive learning environments

How has it been spreading?

EduReach has been gradually expanding across schools and communities in Malawi and other parts of the Global South through a combination of pilot programs, partnerships, and community engagement. Initial rollouts started in schools facing the greatest challenges—rural areas with limited classrooms, long teacher commutes, and scarce learning materials. Positive results from these pilots, including improved student engagement, consistent learning, and reduced teacher absenteeism, have generated interest from other schools and local education authorities.

The innovation spreads through word-of-mouth among educators, demonstrations at teacher training workshops, and collaboration with local NGOs, community leaders, and district education offices. By showcasing both academic improvements and social impact, EduReach has been adopted by more schools, which then serve as model sites for neighboring communities.

Digital tools also support scaling: once teachers are trained on the platform, they can mentor colleagues remotely, enabling faster replication without the need for extensive physical infrastructure. Community learning hubs further extend the reach to students who cannot attend school daily, demonstrating a scalable, flexible approach to education that adapts to local contexts.

Through this combination of evidence-backed results, partnerships, and digital connectivity, EduReach is steadily growing, spreading awareness of its benefits, and inspiring wider adoption across reg

How have you modified or added to your innovation?

Since its initial development, EduReach has evolved to better meet the needs of students, teachers, and communities in the Global South. We added offline access capabilities, allowing students in areas with limited or no internet connectivity to continue learning uninterrupted. Interactive features such as quizzes, discussion boards, and project-based modules were introduced to increase engagement and support collaborative learning.

To address teacher challenges, we implemented remote teaching options and data-driven scheduling, reducing travel burdens and ensuring consistent classroom instruction. Community learning hubs were established as a supplement to schools, providing safe spaces with devices, internet access, and local support for learners who cannot attend school daily.

Feedback loops from teachers and students have informed continuous improvements, including localized content in multiple languages and culturally relevant lessons that integrate societal-change topics such as gender equity, climate action, social justice, and peace education.

These modifications have made EduReach more accessible, flexible, and impactful, enabling it to reach a broader range of learners while maintaining its focus on fostering socially conscious, empowered students and supporting teachers in delivering quality education.
