Ecological Puppet Workshop

Make a Puppet, Dream a Dream, Change the Future!

Ecological Puppet Workshop is an advanced education model that raises environmental awareness through puppet making and creative drama methods using clean waste methods. It enables children to explore their creativity, gain recycling awareness and develop their social-emotional skills.

With the Ecological Puppet Workshop, we aim for children to become producers, not consumers. By combining creativity, environmental awareness and manual skills, we aim to raise sensitive, innovative and responsible generations for a sustainable future.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

Ecological Puppet Workshop combines children's creativity and environmental awareness, offering an alternative to the consumer culture caused by plastic toys. Children who make their own toys with recyclable materials both improve their productivity and gain awareness for a sustainable future.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

Students design their own puppets using recyclable materials such as wood and fabric. They also bring their puppets to life through creative drama and storytelling. The workshop process is scientifically analyzed by evaluating with the Torrance Test of Creative Thinking (TTCT) and the Recycling Attitude Scale (RTS)

How has it been spreading?

5,000 students and teachers reached between 2022-2024
It is planned to be expanded to international schools by 2025.
Global access will be increased with digitalization and virtual workshops

If I want to try it, what should I do?

Educators can follow the steps of collecting clean waste materials, teaching design-oriented thinking processes and supporting them with creative drama techniques to follow the workshop.

Implementation steps

Step 1: Preparation and Planning
Determine the Target Audience: Determine the age group and number of participants you will implement the project (e.g. elementary school students, groups of 10-15 people). Gather the Materials: Prepare recyclable materials (cardboard, wooden pieces, fabrics) and basic craft supplies (glue, scissors, tape, paint). Prepare the Space: Choose a suitable area for the workshop (classroom, workshop or outdoor area) and arrange the materials.
Step 2: Recycling and Environmental Awareness Training
Present: Give a short presentation about the importance of recycling and environmental impacts. Support with visuals and videos. Brainstorm: Brainstorm with participants on environmental issues and write their ideas on the board. Create a Scenario: Present an environmental problem scenario to participants and start a discussion on this scenario.
Step 3: Character and Scenario Development
Character Design: Have participants create a character for their puppet. Help them determine the character’s characteristics (name, personality, relationship to environmental issue). Scenario Writing: Have participants write a story in which their puppet encounters an environmental issue. Provide guidance during script writing
Step 4: Puppet Design and Production
Material Exploration: Introduce participants to recyclable materials and show them what can be done with them. Design Process: Have participants begin designing their puppets for their scenarios. Provide guidance through the design process. Production: Help participants produce their puppets. Provide support in materials use and creativity.
Step 5: Creative Drama and Performance
Drama Preparation: Teach participants creative drama techniques and explain how to perform with their puppets. Role Play: Have participants dramatize environmental issues with their puppets. Guide them to act out their characters. Performance: Have participants act out their puppets’ problem-solving process.
Step 6: Presentation and Evaluation
Presentation Preparation: Explain how participants will present their projects and help them prepare their presentations. Project Presentations: Have participants make presentations explaining their puppets’ thinking changes at the beginning and end. Feedback: Provide feedback to participants and each other. Evaluate developments in environmental awareness and creative thinking skills.
Step 7: Report and Share
Report Project Results: Report project results and document participants’ progress. Share: Share project outcomes (photos, videos, puppets) with school, social media, or local community.
