About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

American Honda Motor Company set out in May 1989 to find opportunities to further its long-term commitment of contributing to society in an area unrelated to the company's daily business needs. Through careful research, the vision that became Eagle Rock School and Professional Development Center was created.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

Eagle Rock is an independent, full-scholarship, residential high school. We serve students who are seeking an experiential, project-based, interdisciplinary approach to learning and are working to engage more fully in their high school experience. ERS is an anti-racist, social justice institution. We are actively working to upend the historical and structural oppression that has played a significant role in the lives of our students.

ERS is a values-driven community guided by the principles of 8 themes + 5 expectations = 10 commitments. Students pursue learning in line with these values and the curriculum is designed around five expectations. Students graduate with a competency-based diploma through academic courses, personal growth experiences, service, community engagement, and campus leadership. Courses are interdisciplinary, experiential, and learner-centered. Students are not divided into grade levels. All classes are open to all students.

How has it been spreading?

A companion to Eagle Rock School, the Professional Development Center reached 1,072 Total Schools in the 2020 reporting period.

If I want to try it, what should I do?

Our Professional Development Center works with Changemakers (educators & students) committed to preparing the next generation of leaders to break down unjust systems. We empower and support students to become catalysts of change (in their lives and communities). Students who embrace the power of diversity and are boldly committed to charting a new path, together.
