About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

We created Dhwani Media-on-a-Bike to overcome the barriers of access to media education in rural India. We recognized that children in remote areas often lack opportunities to express themselves creatively. By bringing media literacy directly to these communities, we empower children to tell their stories, develop essential skills, and build confidence, all while amplifying their voices.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

Dhwani Media-on-a-Bike is an innovative media education program that brings hands-on learning to remote communities via an instructor traveling with media kits on a bike. Children and youth (ages 11–25) are equipped with iPads, microphones, tripods, and workbooks to learn skills like story writing, shooting, editing, and producing films, radio programs, and art. The program culminates in Kala Kootami, a vibrant fair where participants showcase their work. The stories created are compiled in Aha Katha, a book that is also shared online, amplifying the voices of the young creators and allowing them to reach a global audience. Dhwani empowers these children and youth to express themselves, build confidence, and develop skills that can create new opportunities for them.

How has it been spreading?

Dhwani Media-on-a-Bike is currently running in over four states across India, with 11 bikes traveling to remote communities, bringing media education to children and youth. The program has gained momentum through local partnerships, reaching more areas each year. We produce two editions of Aha Katha annually, showcasing the creative work of participants. This year, a mega creativity fair was organized, reaching over 5000 children and providing them with a platform to showcase their skills. The program continues to expand, empowering young creators and amplifying their voices.
