Teachers in Iraq typically begin their work with strong subject knowledge but without formal preparation in pedagogy. Many schools report that teachers rely on lecture-based instruction, have difficulty managing classrooms, and receive little practical support. During our early discovery work with schools in Baghdad, teachers repeatedly expressed that they lacked a structured way to improve their practice. Workshops they attended were often theoretical and did not translate into daily teaching.
The Confident Teacher Program was created to provide a clear and practical learning pathway that teachers can use in real classrooms. The program is built on four modules that introduce essential teaching practices such as lesson planning, preparing the learning environment, activating thinking, and formative assessment. The design is inspired by Finnish teacher development but adapted to Iraq through Arabic-first materials, examples from local classrooms, and blended delivery that works within teachers' schedules.
Our aim is to strengthen teacher confidence, support consistent instructional quality, and make modern teaching skills accessible to schools across Iraq.
In practice, the program follows a four-module learning journey, each targeting an essential part of effective teaching:
Module 1: Plan Effective Lessons
Teachers learn the six-phase lesson model and practice designing clear, purposeful lessons.
Module 2: Prepare the Learning Environment
They establish routines, structure, and classroom expectations that help lessons run smoothly.
Module 3: Enhance Thinking and Understanding
Teachers practice questioning strategies, activating prior knowledge, and supporting deeper understanding.
Module 4: Support Reflection and Growth
They develop skills in feedback, formative assessment, and helping students reflect on learning.
Each module includes four hands-on workshops, Arabic-first videos, daily classroom practice, and reflection through learning diaries. Teachers apply one strategy per week and document what worked, what changed, and how students responded. The Smart AI Teacher Assistant being built, will offer immediate help with planning, questioning, and assessment prompts.
Peer support is continuous through WhatsApp groups and short check-ins. Teachers share evidence from their classrooms, receive encouragement, and adapt strategies together. School leaders observe visible improvements in lesson clarity, smoother routines, better student engagement, and rising teacher confidence.
By the end of the module sequence, teachers report feeling more capable, less stressed, and more connected to a profession
The spread began with the inaugural 4-week program in August–September 2025, which exceeded expectations. Schools invested directly in their teachers’ participation, signalling confidence in the model and a commitment to professional growth. Feedback was excellent: teachers reported increased confidence, smoother lessons, and more engaged students, while school leaders noticed tangible improvements in teaching quality and classroom climate.
Building on this momentum, in September and October, we conducted a successful larger training with the Iraqi Teachers Union. This pivotal initiative directly led to the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).
This partnership fundamentally shifts our scaling strategy. We are now working on practical steps with the Union to systematically access their network of hundreds of thousands of Iraqi teachers. This MOU provides the operational framework to move from private pilots to national-scale deployment, ensuring the program reaches the public sector workforce that needs it most.
From the start, we treated the program as a living design shaped by Iraqi teachers. Each cohort will help refine the blended rhythm: combining in-person workshops, micro-modules, and reflection, so it fits the realities of schools in Iraq.
One key modification was visual and cultural adaptation. Our local teacher team reviewed the initial videos, and we redesigned them with images and examples that reflect Iraqi classrooms: large groups, limited resources, and the cultural context teachers know. We adopted an Arabic-first approach, adding captions and voiceovers to make the content both accessible and relatable.
Teachers also asked for practical extensions beyond this program. These themes are now planned to be part of new modules and workshops.
Every adjustment has made the program more Iraqi in identity and Arabic in voice, a co-created pathway, rooted in local reality yet open to continuous growth.
