Boom Library aims to boost literacy by fostering a love of reading among children in Iran and Afghanistan, where many struggle with reading even in later primary years. By providing diverse, engaging books, we inspire curiosity, new ideas, and questions. Our goal is to help children connect with their culture and the world, building confidence and a lifelong passion for learning and reading.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

We created Boom Library to respond to a critical and often overlooked gap in access to children’s literature in Persian and the diverse regional languages of Iran and Afghanistan. In many towns and villages across these countries, schools operate without libraries, and children grow up without the joy and educational support that books can offer. At the same time, in diasporic communities around the world, families struggle to find culturally relevant, age-appropriate books in their heritage languages—limiting children’s ability to maintain language fluency, build identity, and stay connected to their roots.

We believe that every child—regardless of geography, language, or economic background—deserves access to quality literature that reflects their culture, stories, and lived experiences. Boom was created as an inclusive, digital-first solution to eliminate barriers of location, infrastructure, and cost. By curating and digitizing books in Persian and other regional languages such as Kurdish, Azeri, Baluchi, and Pashto, Boom makes language-rich, culturally grounded books accessible to families, educators, and communities worldwide.

This innovation is rooted in a vision of language justice, educational equity, and cultural belonging—especially for marginalized and multilingual children whose voices are often missing in mainstream publishing. Boom is not just a library; it’s a doorway to imagination, identity, and inclusion.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

In practice, Boom Library is a user-friendly digital platform co-designed with children, families, and educators. Through a visually engaging and accessible interface, users can explore a growing collection of high-quality children’s books in Persian and regional languages such as Kurdish, Baluchi, Pashto, Azeri, and others spoken across Iran and Afghanistan. Books are organized by age, theme, and language, and presented in three formats—e-books, audiobooks, and videos—to ensure every child can access stories in the way that works best for them.

For diasporic families, Boom is a powerful tool to maintain language use at home and deepen cultural ties. For educators and community workers, it offers inclusive, multilingual teaching materials that are often hard to find or afford.

Behind the scenes, we collaborate with authors, illustrators, translators, and cultural advisors—many from underrepresented communities—to ensure content is both linguistically accurate and culturally grounded. We also partner with grassroots organizations and schools to co-design features that respond to real-world needs.

Boom is more than a digital bookshelf—it’s a living, evolving space for learning, identity, and cultural continuity across generations and borders.

How has it been spreading?

Boom Library has been growing organically through trusted networks and community-centered partnerships. Our primary method of outreach is word of mouth, which has been especially powerful in diasporic and marginalized communities where personal and community trust plays a key role in resource sharing. Families, educators, and community workers who have used Boom often introduce it to others, creating a ripple effect of engagement.

We also work directly with educators, librarians, and grassroots organizations in under-resourced areas to identify needs and co-create meaningful ways to introduce Boom. These collaborations help us offer free memberships to children in marginalized communities, both locally and globally.

Another way Boom is spreading is through partnerships with worker unions and industry groups. We’ve begun offering free access to Boom for the children of union members, especially in sectors with large numbers of Persian-speaking or immigrant workers. This approach supports family well-being and helps bridge the literacy gap for children whose parents face economic and systemic barriers.

Our growth strategy is relational, not transactional. We prioritize deep collaboration over mass outreach, ensuring that Boom is introduced in ways that are culturally respectful, trusted, and sustainable. As a result, our user base continues to grow through community trust, shared values, and collective action.

How have you modified or added to your innovation?

Over time, we’ve continued to evolve Boom Library in response to the needs and feedback of our users. What began as a simple digital bookshelf has gradually expanded to include audio and video sections, recognizing that children have diverse learning styles and literacy levels. These formats support early readers, children with disabilities, and those who learn best through listening or visual storytelling.

To improve usability, we’ve worked on better categorization of content, organizing books by age group, theme, language, and format to make browsing easier and more intuitive. We’ve also enhanced the search function, making it more user-friendly and responsive so that families and educators can quickly find the stories they need.

Language access has also expanded. In addition to Persian and several regional languages, we’ve recently added Dari and English, allowing children from bilingual or multilingual households to engage with content in multiple languages.

On the content side, we’re actively collaborating with local authors, illustrators, and storytellers to develop and feature new, original books that reflect the lived experiences, cultures, and voices of underrepresented communities. These updates reflect our commitment to keeping Boom dynamic, inclusive, and relevant—rooted in community and responsive to change.
