The Flitlits: Fun Literacy Reading Scheme

Level the playing field for kids.

It's the Year of Reading in the UK with hugely appropriate emphasis at governmental level and below on reading for pleasure. This is an issue that I have worked towards for many years, creating concepts that blend storytelling, illustration, and interactive learning to make literacy engaging and fun.
The Covid epidemic affected literacy ievels incredibly and children help.

Improved literacy standards, absolutely, leading to better future prospects for children who are deserving. The need is urgent I aim to see an uptake in reading involving all genders and reading for pleasure. This need is also urgent. I hope to see educational and media-driven applications coming together to meet the current echo system in order to provide children with the best opportunities possible in all aspects of their lives.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

To level the paying field for children. Their literacy levels have dropped significantly since the Covid epidemic, affecting their future prospects exponentially. The current initiative by the National Literacy Trust in the UK - National Year of Reading 2026 - is of extreme importance along with strong advocacy in terms of Reading for Pleasure, The latter lies at the heart of my concepts and initiatives.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

My uploaded video outlines this in detail. I concentrate on the results of intensive research, development and pilot work at schools in the UK and beyond. Having detected hiatuses in provision in key areas, I work tirelessly to address the issues and to create educational/edutainment concepts I'm currently finalising the adaptation of my fun literacy series spanning ages 7-11 - titled The Flitlits - as a comprehensive series of books: UK/US versions, that are cross-curricular and community-driven. The books offer tiered instruction as both supported and confident reading editions, with associated glossaries that allows support within multicultural and mixed ability classrooms; and learners of English as an additional language. The books span the divide between picture books and chapter novels and are highly illustrated, serving the needs of the high numbers of visual learners and those who find the leap to chapter books to be too immediate. The Flitlit concept is community-driven, involving characters that children can identify with within their own lives. The crew includes characters with disabilities, introduced naturally. There is much emphasis on dyslexia within texts and layouts.

How has it been spreading?

The concept began as a junior initiative on the Welsh curriculum, leading to a series of trilingual apps that featured on the App Store for 5 years, created for a higher age group, during which time the Flitlit stories were enjoyed by thousands of children internationally. Once the print and digital books are finalised, which is imminent, audio books will follow.

How have you modified or added to your innovation?

Junior concept = Apps = Print and Digital Books = Audio Books and classroom resources pending. Welsh versions are also planned.

If I want to try it, what should I do?
