The Lafiya Sarari Initiative

Value-based learning for girls in safe, nurturing spaces

The Lafiya Sarari Initiative was created to address the increase in out-of-school girls, resulting from the insurgency in Nigeria. By providing a safe, accessible space for child-centred learning, trauma-informed care and psycho-social support, our initiative improves resilience, supports life skill development and prevents radicalisation; all which directly contribute to SDGs 3, 4, 5 and 16.

We aim to see children, especially girls, gain equitable access to quality, supportive learning environments. Through our initiative, we hope to improve foundation skills, strengthen psycho-social well-being, and ensure communities and schools work together so every child can learn, thrive and transition successfully.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

Northeast Nigeria , especially Borno, has suffered a large scale loss of life, destruction of property, and poor education indicators due to the ongoing insurgency. Though several interventions have been created to address infrastructural development, there is a gap in education content and quality. LSI aims to reduce education gender gaps and improve learning outcomes, preventing radicalisation and violent extremism.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

The innovation uses an basic accelerated education and values based methodology that is trauma informed, integrating eight values - integrity, honesty, respect, tolerance, justice, faith, unity, and peace - into the content of the Nigerian National school curriculum. The program is able to get students with no prior education into university within nine years.

How has it been spreading?

The Lafiya Sarari Initiative has transitioned 64 young girls through a scholarship scheme into the American University of Nigeria (AUN) and Al-ansar University respectively. The programme is able to get 64 girls with no prior education into university using the trauma informed approach.

Our goal is to scale up this initiative in the context where we work to give access to safe, trauma-informed education to girls.

If I want to try it, what should I do?

Our approach is designed to support the holistic rehabilitation, education and reintegration of vulnerable girls. Therefore to adopt the methodology of the Initiative, one has to conduct a local needs assessment and engage key stakeholders, government, community leaders, schools, and protection actors, to align priorities. Establish coordination structures, adapt core components with their input, and ensure joint monitoring. Neem Foundation is open to collaborating with partners who are passionate about education and can be contacted for technical guidance.

Implementation steps

Implementation Instruction Summary
The Lafiya Sarari methodology is an approach designed to support the holistic education, rehabilitation and reintegration of vulnerable children, especially girls through a structured community driven, and evidence-based model. To adapt this methodology to a context similar to ours, the following steps are recommended.
1. Conduct a comprehensive contextual needs assessment:
Begin with a detailed assessment of the target community, including security dynamics, education needs, psycho social vulnerabilities and existing service gaps. The assessment should also include consultations with community leaders and education authorities.
2. Mapping of Stakeholders and Establish Coordination Mechanism:
It is important to identify relevant government agencies, and security actors who will play a key role in the intervention. Following the mapping, establish a coordination platform to ensure shared accountability and smooth implementation. At Neem Foundation, we established a steering committee to support as part of our co-creation approach.
3. Build Local Capacity:
Train teachers, counsellors using the trauma-informed and child-protection sensitive approaches.
4. Establish Monitoring, Learning and Accountability Systems:
Worthy of note is to set up a result oriented framework to track educational progress, psycho social outcomes, and reintegration indicators. Integrating regular learning reviews to refine the model as implementation evolves can not be overemphasised.
5. Plan and Scale:
Begin with a pilot phase to test the adapted approach and use evidence from the pilot to refine and scale the programme sustainably.
