I want children who are blind or visually impaired to encounter culture, creativity, and early learning as active participants, not as observers of experiences designed for sighted children. The long-term change is for multisensory accessibility to become a normal part of early education from the beginning, rather than an accommodation added later. Educators should have practical, affordable methods for translating visual concepts into tactile, verbal, auditory, and movement-based experiences. I hope the Tactile Mini-Museum Pysanka will inspire schools, resource centers, museums, and families to create accessible cultural-learning spaces rooted in their own communities. The model can preserve local heritage while building foundational skills, confidence, independence, and belonging. Ultimately, I want inclusive teaching to recognize that children learn in different ways and that disability does not limit curiosity, creativity, or meaningful participation.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

Children who are blind or visually impaired often receive cultural and early-learning content through methods designed mainly for sighted learners. This limits access to symbols, shapes, spatial concepts, fine-motor experiences, language-rich exploration, and shared participation with peers. I created the Tactile Mini-Museum Pysanka while working as a typhlopedagogue in a specialized preschool group in Ukraine. The traditional Ukrainian pysanka became an accessible learning object that children could explore through touch, guided description, movement, sound, storytelling, and creative work. The goal is not simply to teach a cultural craft. It is to create a respectful, motivating environment in which children build sensory perception, spatial thinking, communication, confidence, independence, and social participation.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

In practice, the educator organizes a small, accessible museum environment with tactile egg-shaped models, raised patterns, contrasting materials, safe craft resources, stories, movement activities, and guided questions. Children first explore objects with their hands and, when useful, with residual vision. The teacher names shapes, directions, textures, patterns, and cultural meanings, then invites children to compare, sort, describe, reproduce, and create. Activities are adjusted to each child’s visual and developmental needs and can be delivered individually, in a small group, or together with peers. Families can repeat selected activities at home. The methodology links sensory development, orientation, language, creativity, emotional engagement, and cultural identity within one coherent learning experience.

How has it been spreading?

The approach began in Preschool Educational Institution No. 7 in Kalynivka, Ukraine, where I worked with children with visual impairments for more than eleven years. It was shared through practical demonstrations, methodological materials, professional articles, educator networks, and cooperation with families and specialists. Other educators have used elements of the approach, and the Inclusive Resource Center of Kalynivka adopted relevant practices. I have continued disseminating the underlying inclusive methods through publications, professional presentations, educational resources, and international conferences in vision rehabilitation and special education. The model is intentionally low-cost and adaptable so that a preschool, resource center, teacher, or family can reproduce it with locally available materials.

How have you modified or added to your innovation?

The original museum concept has developed into a broader multisensory teaching methodology. I added structured tactile exploration, verbal description, spatial-orientation tasks, movement, storytelling, creative art, and family participation. Activities were individualized for children with different levels of vision and additional developmental needs. I also connected the museum work with adapted origami and other hands-on methods that strengthen fine-motor coordination, sequencing, imagination, and independence. Feedback from families, educators, and specialists informed these refinements. Later methodological and scholarly work organized the practices more systematically so they could be explained, evaluated, and transferred to other educational settings while preserving the child-centered and culturally meaningful character of the innovation.

If I want to try it, what should I do?

Begin with a small collection of safe tactile models inspired by pysanka shapes and patterns. Use raised lines, contrasting textures, large forms, and materials that are comfortable to touch. Plan a short sequence: guided tactile exploration; naming and comparison; a story or cultural explanation; a movement or spatial task; and a creative activity in which each child makes or arranges a pattern. Describe everything verbally and allow enough time for independent exploration. Adapt contrast, size, complexity, and assistance to the child’s functional vision and sensory needs. Record observations and invite family feedback. Educators may start with one themed session, then build a mini-museum over time. The approach can be integrated into preschool, special education, rehabilitation, cultural learning, or family activities.

Implementation steps

Assess learners and define accessible goals
Identify each child’s functional vision, tactile experience, communication needs, sensory preferences, and level of independence. Choose two or three clear goals, such as recognizing shapes and textures, using spatial vocabulary, following a sequence, expressing choices, or participating with peers. Consult the family and relevant specialists when available.
Build a safe tactile mini-museum
Prepare egg-shaped models and pattern elements using safe, durable materials with raised lines, varied textures, and strong visual contrast. Arrange them at an accessible height and in a predictable order. Add simple labels or object descriptions, and check that every item can be explored comfortably with both hands.
Guide multisensory exploration
Introduce one object at a time. Let children explore independently before offering hand-under-hand guidance. Name shapes, textures, directions, and cultural meanings; invite comparison, sorting, description, storytelling, sound, and movement. Adjust pace, language, contrast, and task complexity to each learner.
Create, communicate, and collaborate
Invite each child to create or arrange a tactile pattern, make choices, explain discoveries, and work with peers. Connect the activity to language, fine-motor skills, spatial orientation, cultural identity, confidence, and independence. Give families a simple activity they can repeat with available materials at home.
Observe progress and refine the activities
Record brief observations before and after a sequence of sessions: recognition of objects and patterns, use of spatial vocabulary, fine-motor control, attention, communication, confidence, and independent participation. Gather feedback from the child, family, and specialists, then adapt materials and goals for the next cycle.
