One of the primary challenges in preschools is the difficulty of maintaining young children's engagement with books in their Second Language (Chinese, Malay, and Tamil), especially when resources or familiarity with the language are limited. By using Luka, educators can bridge this gap by providing a personalized, AI-driven reading experience. Teachers harness this technology to support children’s reading in Chinese, Malay, and Tamil, including tips for recording personalized content, utilizing Luka's voice feature, and tailoring sessions to individual learning needs. Key strategies will include using Luka to facilitate interactive reading sessions, incorporating multisensory learning methods, and encouraging children to participate by turning pages or asking questions during the reading process.
In the classroom, Luka the AI reading robot serves as an interactive, multilingual reading companion that enhances children’s engagement with picture books, especially in their Mother Tongue Languages (Chinese, Malay, and Tamil). Positioned at reading stations or used during language lessons, Luka reads aloud as children flip through books at their own pace, fostering independent and enjoyable reading experiences. Teachers can personalize content by recording their own voice, making Luka a valuable tool even when they are not fluent in all languages. By integrating Luka into literacy activities, educators support language development, technological literacy, and reading comprehension while creating a fun, inclusive, and student-centered learning environment.
The Luka AI Reading Robot started as a pilot project in three preschools. It will be introduced to another three preschools in July 2025. Another 20 preschools will have Luka deployed in 2026.
