Why did you create this innovation?

It takes countless hours at home for teachers to provide meaningful feedback on student work. By the time they return it, students no longer care. With Short Answer's approach to peer feedback, teachers’ effort no longer goes to waste and they save valuable time outside the classroom. Students take more agency over their learning and learn critical feedback skills.

How does your innovation work in practice?

Short Answer's three step process is Construct, Compare, and Converse.

All a teacher has to do is type in a question and click "begin." Students then get the question on their device, construct their responses, and rate their confidence in their response. When the teacher has all responses, students are presented with a pair of peer responses and are prompted to vote for which is stronger. After the student has voted, they’re then prompted to justify that selection using pre-written bubbles of feedback. The teacher then has more data and information to lead a rich and engaging class discussion related to the peer feedback.

Short Answer can be used as an introductory bellringer, main classroom event, quick check for understanding, or exit ticket. It's flexible and adaptable to teacher needs.

How has it been spreading?

Short Answer recently won the Stanford Learning Design Challenge and the Futures Forum on Learning Tools Competition. We are launching a pilot in 20 middle and high school classes around the country in the Fall.
