About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

We created RiRa Education Awards – Empowering Rural Excellence to address a critical gap in rural education: the lack of recognition and encouragement for high-achieving students. In many villages, talented students work tirelessly but remain largely unseen, which can limit their opportunities for higher education and personal growth. By celebrating the top performers across Arts, Commerce, Science, Mathematics, and Technology streams, our program provides both recognition and motivation, inspiring students to reach their full potential.

The initiative also aims to increase university admissions for Super Merit and Merit achievers by highlighting their accomplishments at the district level. Beyond academics, the awards foster a culture of excellence, perseverance, and leadership among young learners, encouraging them to become the engineers, innovators, and changemakers of tomorrow.

RiRa Awards is designed as a scalable, community-driven model that can be replicated in other districts or countries, empowering rural communities to value education, nurture talent, and build pathways for long-term social impact. Through this initiative, we aim to bridge educational disparities, inspire ambition, and strengthen the connection between achievement and opportunity in underserved regions.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

RiRa Education Awards is an annual recognition program held in Vavuniya district, Sri Lanka, that celebrates top-performing A/L students from rural villages. The process begins with identifying high-achieving students based on Super Merit and Merit scores across streams such as Arts, Commerce, Biology, Mathematics, B–Tec, and E–Tec.

The program includes:
• A formal award ceremony where students receive certificates, trophies, and public recognition.
• Participation of school leaders and community figures, including principals and coordinators, to mentor and motivate students.
• Media coverage and community acknowledgment, ensuring students’ achievements are visible beyond their schools.
• Support and encouragement from the founder, U.K. Ranjith, fostering a culture of excellence and aspiration.

In practice, the innovation creates visible role models, motivates students to pursue higher education, and strengthens the connection between effort, achievement, and opportunity. It’s designed as a replicable model, where other districts or regions can adopt a similar structure to recognize and empower their rural students.

How has it been spreading?

Since its inception, RiRa Education Awards – Empowering Rural Excellence has grown steadily within Vavuniya district, gaining recognition among schools, students, and local communities. Word of mouth, social media posts, and local news coverage have helped expand awareness, encouraging more schools to participate and more students to strive for excellence.

The model is designed to be replicable, and other districts have expressed interest in adopting a similar recognition system to honor high-achieving students. By documenting the process, sharing success stories, and providing guidance for coordination, RiRa Awards has begun to inspire other rural communities to implement comparable programs, spreading the culture of academic recognition and motivation across the region.

Through this gradual dissemination, the innovation is moving from a single-district initiative to a scalable, community-driven model, promoting education, achievement, and leadership among students in underserved areas.

How have you modified or added to your innovation?

Since its launch, RiRa Education Awards – Empowering Rural Excellence has continuously evolved to better serve students and the community. Initially focused on recognizing academic excellence in core subjects like Arts, Commerce, Biology, and Mathematics, we expanded the program to include B–Tec and E–Tec streams, ensuring that students in technical and vocational tracks are also celebrated.

We have added structured mentorship and guidance components, where school leaders, coordinators, and community volunteers provide support to awardees, helping them navigate university applications and career planning.

To increase visibility and impact, we incorporated multimedia elements such as photos, videos, and social media coverage, highlighting student achievements and inspiring peers.

Finally, the program is now designed as a replicable model, with documentation and guidance for other schools and districts to implement similar recognition systems, fostering a culture of excellence and motivation across rural communities
