Ready to Read Phonics Program

place India + 1 more

Building readers, Bridging Futures

Ready-to-Read Phonics is an inclusive phonics program that builds strong foundational literacy among early learners, particularly in under-resourced communities of the Global South. Rooted in play-based pedagogy, it bridges linguistic barriers and reduces early learning gaps — empowering children with the skills to thrive and fostering lifelong, equitable learning in alignment with SDG 4.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

The declining literacy skills among children in our country compel us to analyze how reading is taught in the foundational years of schooling. The National Curriculum Framework (NCF) 2022 for the foundational stage indicates that early language classrooms often focus primarily on teaching the alphabet, spellings, repetitive reading of texts led by the teacher or student, and handwriting practice, which is mostly copying. Unfortunately, there is minimal emphasis on nurturing children as independent readers and writers.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

Our Ready to Read Phonics Programme turns early classrooms into joyful reading spaces where even 3-year-olds begin decoding words within weeks. The programme blends structured phonics lessons, colorful Bal Vatika Workbooks, and interactive classroom routines. Each day includes sound introduction, blending, and word reading through songs, stories, and visual cues. Teachers follow a multisensory approach, while parents receive short audio clips for home reinforcement. Within just 20 days, children read simple CVC words, and by the end of kindergarten, there are no struggling readers. It’s a practical, research-based model combining phonics, play, and home-school partnership.

How has it been spreading?

Our Ready to Read Phonics Programme began as a small pilot within our own group of schools and has now grown into a network of 38 schools successfully implementing it. The spread has been entirely organic, driven by visible classroom results and word-of-mouth among educators. Teachers quickly noticed that even 3-year-olds were decoding words within 20 days, which inspired other schools to adopt the model.

The expansion has been supported by structured teacher training workshops, phonics demo sessions, and the distribution of our Bal Vatika Phonics Workbooks.

If I want to try it, what should I do?

If you’d like to try our Ready to Read Phonics Programme, we begin by offering a short orientation and demo session for your teachers. This session introduces the step-by-step structure of our phonics lessons, blending techniques, and workbook usage. After that, we help you pilot the programme in one or two classrooms for 3–4 weeks using our Bal Vatika Phonics Workbooks and supporting digital audio clips.

Our academic team provides teacher training, daily lesson plans, and monitoring support during this pilot phase. You’ll quickly observe that even first-time learners start decoding simple words within 20 days. Based on the pilot’s success, you can then extend the programme to other classes.

Implementation steps

Ready to Read phonic Workbooks for Foundational Stage Children
Graded workbooks based on Phonics and Phonemic Awareness have been designed. These workbooks contain QR codes on every worksheet so as to make the sounds of letters of alphabet clear to the children. There are teaching instructions below every page. A phonic app is also in the developmental stage.
