PLAY - A Digital Leadership Program for Montessori Education.

Nurturing Future Digital Leaders using Montessori Principles.

"PLAY" is revolutionizing Montessori education in Nigeria by embedding digital literacy into early childhood learning through gamified, interactive tools. In a context where access to technology and digital skills is often limited, "PLAY" addresses this gap by offering a unique solution that enhances problem-solving and cognitive development, all while preserving Montessori principles.

With "PLAY," we aim to integrate digital literacy seamlessly into early childhood education, especially within Montessori settings. Our long-term vision is that digital skills become as natural to learn as reading or math, helping children grow into confident digital citizens. We hope to see Montessori schools globally use digital tools to foster curiosity and problem-solving.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

We created "PLAY" after realizing during our Digital Transformation Leadership (DTL) trainings that younger children in Montessori settings were not adequately engaged in digital literacy activities. While older students quickly adapted to digital tools, early learners were left behind. "PLAY" addresses this gap by integrating digital skills into Montessori education, ensuring their participation.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

In practice, "PLAY" introduces digital learning through gamified, age-appropriate tools integrated directly into Montessori classrooms. Children use tablets and digital platforms to engage in interactive, self-directed activities that align with Montessori principles of exploration and independence. For example, digital puzzles, drawing apps, and storytelling platforms help children develop problem-solving and cognitive skills while keeping their learning experience fun and engaging. Teachers and parents are also involved, receiving training and resources to guide children’s digital experiences both in school and at home.

How has it been spreading?

"PLAY" has started gaining attention in Montessori schools across Nigeria, particularly in areas where digital literacy is becoming a priority. We are currently piloting the program with several schools, and early feedback has been positive. As more educators recognize the value of integrating digital literacy into Montessori education, we expect the program to grow organically through word-of-mouth, partnerships with educational institutions, and ongoing teacher training.
