Approximately 80% of Haitian educators lack adequate training, 25% of Haitian educators have never attended secondary schools (Borgen Project, 2019), and 60% of Haitian students drop out of school before completing the 6th grade (CRS, 2012). Ongoing teacher education programs are needed in order for the next generation of Haitian students to receive the quality instruction they need to succeed.
Our School Quality Assurance Program provides participants with research-based, student-centered strategies that transform classroom culture. This program includes 72-hours of training conducted over a three-year span. All materials and trainings are hosted in Haitian Creole and are designed to engage educators in collaborative learning structures. After a total of 24-hours of instruction (1 year of training), our educators demonstrate a 50% increase in their knowledge of the curriculum covered.
In addition to teacher training, P4H Global's education specialists conduct an in-depth school assessment, which includes classroom observations, interviews, and surveys. This assessment informs the pedagogical interventions and provides baseline data for future evaluations. After the training, educators are asked engage in continued observations and coaching, while conducting peer-classroom observations. Directors of schools are provided with continued follow-up phone support and monitoring.
P4H Global strives to ensure that 100% of Haitian educators are adequately trained and equipped to be effective teachers. We've partnered with dozens of organizations in Haiti to accomplish this, including the Haitian Ministry of Education and world-renowned NGOs such as Food for the Poor and the Digicel Foundation.
We improve the teaching practices of Haitian educators through our trainings. In 2019, a thematic analysis was conducted 6 months after our training with school directors, and the 5 most frequent themes were identified: 1) Improved teacher motivation, 2) Decreased use of hitting children as a disciplinary strategy, 3) Improved positive environment in classrooms and schools, 4) Increased use of student-centered strategies by teachers, and 5) Increased student attendance.
