We are all migrants

We want to change the narrative regarding migration, which is why we developed a pedagogical intervention: "Mudanza, todos somos migrantes" (Moving, We Are All Migrants), which invites students to explore their own migration story and discover the migrant in their family.

Target group
Encourage reflection on migration through a real story (your own or your family's), discovering one's own history to capture experiences and associated emotions through the guided work of the Migrant Notebook. Supporting the development of a tolerant and respectful narrative toward cultural diversity. Educating in empathy is therefore key to achieving this.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

Migration is a process that has increased in recent years and will continue to increase. That's why it's essential to develop strategies that transform it from a problem to an opportunity. This program is an invitation to spark reflection on migration. When a child is able to reflect and connect content, we are generating an important change in the way we approach the world.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

We implemented the program in classrooms in four sessions:
In the first, children will participate in guided reading (storytelling).
The other three sessions are for developing the Migrant Notebook, a series of activities that seek to uncover their own migration story. Those who have never been displaced must complete an interview questionnaire with the migrant in their family. With the research work completed, they will be ready to develop the story of their loved one.

How has it been spreading?

The initiative has been publicized in various ways: talks at companies and schools, presentations at universities, a book launch (winner of Best Fiction Book Chile 2023), and media interviews.
The materials have been implemented in various schools in Chile, in partnership with national and international funding, as well as with organizations that use the materials to develop activities in other countries.

Implementation steps

General considerations
This program involves four classroom sessions with students and one training session with teachers. Allow at least one month for implementation.
Teacher Training
Teachers receive training in developing Migrant Notebook activities and work in safe and trusting environments.
Guided reading
Children will participate in a guided reading of the book "Mudanza, todos somos migrantes" (storyteller).
Migrant Notebook Development: Discovering the migrant in my family
Over three sessions, students will complete the activities suggested in the Migrant Notebook. The objective is to discover their own migration story, and those who have never been displaced must complete an interview questionnaire with their migrant family member. With this information, they will be ready to develop their loved one's story.
Share stories
A final session is held, where children share their stories or those of their families. We emphasize the idea of understanding migration not only as a change of country, but also as a change of city or neighborhood, since the emotions experienced are the same for everyone.
In this way, the children visualize that we are all migrants.
