About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

Lern-Fair was founded by university students in the spring of 2020 under the name Corona School in response to the school closures during the first COVID-19 lockdown in Germany. A 1:1-matching between volunteers and pupils for digital, free tutoring should support families in homeschooling-times. We renamed our organization in 2021 and now addressing underprivileged children in their learning.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

Lern-Fair is organized through an online-platform. On our website, underprivileged pupils register according to their needs (1:1 tutoring, group class, homework-assistance, extracurricular project week workshop).

For the 1:1 tutoring we connect our pupils with volunteers via a specifically developed matching algorithm, which takes into account the subject, grade, current waiting period and the location. After the matching, the volunteer and the pupil are informed about the match and put in contact with each other for the free digital tutoring.

We provide different digital resources and workshops to our volunteers to prepare and qualify them as much as possible for their work with the students.
In order to prevent abuse, all volunteers are screened in a digital interview and have to submit a police clearance certificate.

How has it been spreading?

Since 2020 we had 16.000+ Matches for free, digital 1:1 tutoring.

More than 1200 times kids attended our digital project week workshops in 2022. We had over 80 different workshops with more than 50 collaborators for the project weeks.

Nearly 50 university-students in education related professions, went through a special 6-month trainee provided by us in 2022. It sensitized them to topics such as educational (in)justice in Germany, and digital work in education.

More than 1000 times refugee children from Ukraine attended special german-conversation classes to learn the language faster in 2022.
