Kaligo: Digital Handwriting Notebook

Learning how to ‘Write’ the story, shape the future. ‘Kaligo’s goal is to help children learn the fundamentals of handwriting.

Learn&Go is a French start up which created a research-based learning application designed to help accelerate and innovate around how children between 3-8 years learn to write. The app uses a stylus and tablet to imitate the traditional use of pen and paper and is powered by A.I The physical gesture of writing rather than typing or tapping, sparks a cognitive function which helps the user learn.

‘I was fortunate to meet with Learn & Go who are developing 'Kaligo', a wonderful handwriting app. The app uses AI to guide children through development of handwriting (including various styles of cursive and pre-cursive scripts). It is possible, through teacher settings, to adjust size of fonts and 'acceptable' formation of letters. Steve Bambury and I were so convinced of its potential worth, that we are hoping to trial it next term with students in Year Three, at both our JESS campuses. Emma Dibden, Inclusion Champion & Head of Learning Support, JESS, Dubai ‘I am connecting you with Learn & Go. They have an excellent digital handwriting platform called Kaligo which seems very well suited for Early Years. Works on iOS and Android. It really impressed both me and our Inclusion lead. It’s adaptive, versatile and broad. We plan to pilot it throughout term 2 using iPads and the Logitech Crayons’ Steve Bambury, Head of Digital Learning and Innovation at JESS Dubai. Founder of iPad Educators and VirtualiTeach.

About the innovation

Teaching children how to 'write their story, shape their future'.

In 2013, Kaligo responded to a French nationwide request for innovative projects in e-education, with a focus on digital solutions for teaching the fundamentals at school. The proposal won. This created a collaborative project with IntuiScript (www.intuiscript.com). The objective was to create a digital solution that would be used in schools to teach cursive and script handwriting.

The design of the application means the user is actively immersed in what they are learning. Powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning, the application dynamically defines the learning path to the individual user. If an exercise is not understood, the app will propose new learning exercises until mastered. This customized learning path is also inclusive by design in that people of any age, level and skill can use it. The application also has an enhanced tracking and analysis of each exercise for each user built in. Currently no other existing ICT solution has developed an AI engine of this kind.

The analysis and handwriting recognition motors have been developed to give real time feedback allowing the child to instantly see if their letter was well done or not. Depending on the result, the next exercise is adapted to the level or skill acquisition required. As we move into an age of customized and personalized learning, Kaligo adapts to the individual needs of each child.

The same in-depth approach has been applied to creating Kaligo in English. The team have worked with English teachers and academic experts to collect specific gestures, strokes and handwriting approaches so that Kaligo can be implemented as part of the British curriculum as of January 2019. Gathering data and strokes feeds the artificial intelligence engine and machine learning, to then provide the choice of letter styles, writing schemes and the ability to track a student’s progress and results. It is this comprehensive and immersive experience that makes Kaligo unique.

There is also a specific teacher dashboard which means a teacher can plan and manage their class learning plan from one tablet. They can assign a personalized learning plan for each student, monitor their progress and let each student go at their own pace. The inbuilt analysis and replay functions mean a teacher can access the ‘student monitoring function’ and replay a student’s work after the class. This enables a more accurate reporting and analysis. With time, we hope Kaligo will be associated with an overall improvement in school results (reduce ‘echec scolaire’.) and in helping teachers save time in preparing and marking their lesson plans for each student.

Kaligo is inclusive by design. Children of any age and any skill level can use it. All the students in the class can use the same app, however the teacher can define a personalized learning path depending on the profile and requirements of each child. The self-paced- self-correcting approach means that children with learning difficulties or learning English or French as a foreign language can use Kaligo at their own rhythm. All students and users are equal and yet have their own personalized immersive and customized learning path.

To access the Kaligo experience at home, Kaligo Exercises is available on the app store and google play.

We will continue to enhance Kaligo with the upcoming versions. We intend to expand the exercise portfolio of lesson plans and exercises for teachers and students (including phonetics, high frequency words, detailed feedback for each student) and Kaligo in Arabic. The possibilities are endless as we strive to help more children benefit from the personalized and immersive Kaligo learning experience.

How to access Kaligo & Technical specifications

Kaligo Home is available on the App store or Google play

Kaligo for Education is available on request from the kaligo homepage Kaligo

The application runs on all types of tablets which are compatible with an active stylus. Minimal compatibility : Android : 4.4 and iOS 10.

No specific browser or plug-in is necessary to use Kaligo on an Android/iOS tablet.

From a software point of view, the Kaligo application can be refreshed from Google Play and the Apple Store. At each refresh, the user (connected to the internet) will be notified that a new version is available to download. The user will then benefit from the improved functionalities and corrections made, using their existing data.

All tablets loaded with a Kaligo application licence are interoperable and interchangeable if used within the same ecosystem. Ecosystem: to a collection of tablets being used in the same physical space, for example, in a classroom or workshop setting.

Kaligo is only accessible tablets where the application has been previously installed. One of our future developments will include the option to offer the function to export data to enable a copy to be saved on the School’s Digital Workspace.
