How To Be A Kid ™

A WHOLE child, kid-centric approach to learning

How To Be A Kid ™ is a kid-centric, whole child approach that brings the entire body into the learning process. By synthesizing the body and mind with academics, educators are empowered to create more meaningful learning experiences even in the most “traditional” settings. This approach can be seamlessly integrated into any educational setting and is based upon principles of neurodevelopment.

The hope is that we can teach kids the way that kids were designed to learn! It is time for education to evolve and REAL meaningful learning to happen. Sir Ken Robinson said, “we educate our children from the neck up and slightly to one side…” My goal is bring the full body, full mind, WHOLE child into the learning process to make education meaningful, addressing the needs of each kid!

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

As a Doctor of Physical Therapy working with students in over 12 school districts, I synthesized each students academics into their physical workouts. I noticed that MY students weren’t just catching up physically, but academically as well. Upon request, I started to create a user-friendly resource for teachers that turned into a full curriculum. I started with MY kids home school and plan to grow

What does your innovation look like in practice?

I have created a professional development and consultation model where teachers and administrators are part of the creative process and work to improve the kid and staff friendly learning culture in their educational environment. How To Be A Kid helps to organize and synthesize resources into categories (Movement, Stillness, Focus, Collaboration, Child Led Learning (ChiLL ™ ) Time, and Mindfulness) so that it is easy to understand and implement in ANY subject or situation based on the need of the child, class and teacher. There is a strong foundation in SEL culture embedded within the program. There is overwhelming, well-documented evidence supporting movement and multi-sensory learning and its relationship to education as well as overall well-being. Children LOVE to learn, they don’t always love school….How To Be A Kid ™ is here to bridge the gap and empower educators to use creative, kid-centric methods in their teaching. It can be seamlessly integrated into any existing curriculum.

How has it been spreading?

How To Be A Kid ™ started out as a way that I helped my special needs students achieve their IEP goals beyond just Physical Therapy needs. In collaborating with teachers to help students reach academic goals using multi-sensory, developmentally appropriate, full-body methods, I was able to help my students, as well as reach beyond and help others. As the program has developed, I am now providing professional development to teachers, administration and consultation services to help other schools implement this revolutionary approach. While the program has just begun, the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive and I have been invited back to continue to train the staff in the entire district. I am looking to expand to as many schools as I can to help facilitate this education revolution!

If I want to try it, what should I do?

I can be contacted directly at info@howtobeakid.com to schedule a meeting or conversation. Currently, I provide professional development and consultation in small cohorts, but I am always working with each individual district to meet the needs of their school and community.

Implementation steps

Meeting with School Leader
This leader can be the building Principal, Head of Curriculum, Superintendent, etc. It is whoever is the decision-maker and has the ability to schedule professional development and allow for the changes in the school as a result of progress. This is when we discuss the individual needs of the school/staff/district and create a schedule for consultation and professional development.
Cohort/Group Selection and Scheduled
Based upon the collaborative conversation in the meeting, a first group/cohort is selected and scheduled for the How To Be A Kid ™ professional development.
Professional Development
This is an interactive workshop style professional development for educators. It is designed to be fun, engaging, collaborative and interactive. This is where the 6 categories are introduced and explained as well as techniques and examples on how to implement within their current curriculum structure. Discussion and collaboration are encouraged throughout the process. This is typically a multi-day process (ex. 2 half days and a full day, customized). Educators leave with an upgraded toolbox!
Debrief and Follow-Up
This is a meeting with the original “leader” to discuss the program, progress, any challenges in implementation and steps moving forward. We typically schedule a follow up cohort/group and touch base with the original group. We discuss what can be done on an administrative level to support the educators and students on their creative educational journey.
