We created this innovation because Caribbean children deserve stories and spaces where they can see themselves, their cultures, and their coastlines come alive. Too often, learning about our environment feels distant or textbook-dry. We wanted to flip that script. By blending storytelling, Carnival artistry, and marine science, we built an experience that makes ocean literacy joyful, memorable, and rooted in home. Hatch turns big conservation concepts into play, transforming families into co-explorers and nurturing the curiosity that leads to lifelong stewardship. Our goal is simple: when children fall in love with their world, they grow up wanting to protect it.
In practice, the innovation functions as a modular, story-driven ecosystem for environmental learning. It combines physical installations, replica props, digital game prototypes, film, recycled-material workshops, and puppets that turn abstract marine science into a relatable narrative. Armed with a scavenger hunt styled map, families co-created their experience, retention was strengthened through hands-on arts and crafts activities, and all materials were designed to be reused or adapted across schools, libraries, NGOs, and regional festivals. It looks like education redesigned for impact, delight, and scale.
The innovation has been spreading through a combination of partnerships, community demand, and demonstrated impact. Following the festival, regional organisations requested to adapt Hatch materials for their own programmes, including marine education workshops in Antigua, a forthcoming Tobago edition with CANARI and Healing with Horses, and film-focused workshops with the Caribbean Film Festival and Animae Caribe. Digital engagement also extended reach, as families and educators continued interacting with Hatch content online. The model now circulates organically through schools, NGOs, cultural partners, and regional networks.
We are expanding the innovation by building new digital pathways so more children, teachers, and families can enter the Hatch universe from anywhere. What began as an immersive, in-person experience is now growing into e-learning modules, video lessons, worksheets, and digital games that classrooms and homeschoolers can use year-round. We are developing an online platform where our stories, characters, and ocean science tools live together, making Bright Eyed learning more accessible, more inclusive, and available far beyond the festival grounds.
