Gullies as 21st-Century Creative Labs

Gully Gully Code is a youth-led initiative that builds 21st-century skills & bridges digital gap in public schools. We challenge the notion of who has access to quality digital education and redefine traditional lab spaces by utilizing gullies aka slums, as innovative spaces. Our principles are inclusive learning of digital skills and fostering fun collaboration through learning in one's gully

We envision an education system that is joyful, contextual, and youth-led, where slums and underserved areas are seen as spaces of innovation, not just deprivation. Students take on active roles as designers and leaders of their learning, transforming traditional education. Peer learning, storytelling, and community-rooted knowledge will be recognized, making communities thriving ecosystems.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

GGC addresses the need to bridge the digital education gap in public schools as the global economy demands 21st-century skills. It leverages tech and transforms students’ screen time into productive learning, utilizing gullies as innovative spaces and mobiles to overcome resource constraints. By fostering youth-led communities, it ensures future leaders emerge from marginalized backgrounds too.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

Gully Gully Code addresses the digital gap for underprivileged students by offering their first exposure to tech. It empowers students through community-driven, low-cost tech initiatives. Each community begins with a trained student leader who hosts sessions in local spaces, such as homes, schools, or outdoor areas. These 1-1.5 hour sessions use simple materials like chart paper and mobile phones to engage students in activities focused on storytelling, problem-solving, and digital exploration. Through the Code Mitra app, students identify local issues and illustrate them using block-based programming, creating animations or stories. Sessions also include games to build logic, puzzles for team problem-solving, and activities that promote collaboration. 70% of student leaders have led at least one peer session, and 58% of participants have created animations or stories based on local problems. This hands-on approach fosters creativity, logical thinking, and leadership skills. With chapters in two cities now independently led by youth, GGC addresses the digital divide, cultivates leadership, and fosters sustainable, community-driven learning.

How has it been spreading?

Gully Gully Code (GGC) has spread through word-of-mouth, youth energy, and strong community visibility. We've reached 4,000+ students across 5 regions, including Maharashtra (Pune, Mumbai, Solapur, Nanded), Karnataka (Hubli, Bangalore), and Nepal. Currently, 75 student leaders are driving change across 75+ communities.
Chapters expand when a student is inspired to start a team, when leaders visit other communities, or when schools or NGOs invite GGC to support youth-led initiatives. By onboarding new student leaders after every community intervention, we ensure diversity and empowerment.
We've partnered with NGOS like CYDA, Umang, Bal Vikas Kendra, Satyarthi, and Pratham to leverage existing networks and expand our reach. We were also invited by Avasara Academy, leading to the onboarding of 20 female student leaders. Through these partnerships and our student-led approach, GGC is committed to fostering digital inclusion and driving sustainable change in every neighbourhood we reach.

How have you modified or added to your innovation?

Yes. Chapter Leads were new additions to the community initiatives we are scaling and focusing on sustainability.

If I want to try it, what should I do?

Gully Gully Code is an easily replicable youth/ community-led initiate. Students, teachers, parents and community members can reach out to the dynamic GGC team on our Website. Our team then collaborates with community leaders to plan and conduct sessions at community centers.

Implementation steps

Understand the Gully Gully Code Vision
Begin with an orientation session where potential facilitators and student leaders learn about GGC’s core principles and community-driven learning, gamified education, and contextual problem-solving
Install Local Chapters with 5 Key Leads
Choose a space like a classroom, terrace, playground, or gully. Begin with one consistent learning space where students can gather for GGC sessions. Keep it accessible and contextual.
Conduct Intro Sessions Using Gamified Tools
Use open-source tools like Code Mitra, and real-life challenges to run fun and hands-on sessions that build problem-solving, creativity, and collaboration.
Support Peer-led Sessions by Student Leaders
Encourage student leaders to lead sessions. They co-design activities, lead discussions, and build community ownership while developing leadership and facilitation skills.
Monitor Growth
Use simple baseline/endline surveys, reflections, and feedback circles to track progress in skills, leadership, and chapter sustainability.
