Four-Legged Stool

A design tool to create any learning environment you can imagine

The four-legged stool is a design tool using four essential elements of school design: time, space, roles, and goals. To build authentic learner-centered schools, each element needs to be thoughtfully considered. Too often in schools, time is rigid, space is institutional, roles are hierarchical, and goals are standardized. This tool can provide a framework to develop new learning environments.

About the innovation

Use to create dynamic learning environments

We at Fielding International use the four-legged stool as a design tool as we work with schools all over the world. We've found high school age students and early adopter teachers really like working with the four-legged stool as a design tool. It's strikingly simple, yet people have produced amazingly integrated designs that are pushing the thinking of what schools can be.
