The main goal of Earth Warriors is to use climate & sustainability education to empower students to be confident to develop innovative solutions and take climate action in their local communities. Research shows that starting climate & environmental education at a young age is key to building lifelong sustainable habits and we hope to embed these through our Earth Warriors curriculum.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

Children & teachers worldwide are demanding climate education. Climate change is taking a big mental health toll with 77% of children more concerned about it than anything else. 95% of teachers want to teach climate ed but <40% feel confident to do so. Climate education is a proven tool to combat climate change, but there is a lack of age-appropriate climate education for our youngest learners.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

To fill this gap, Earth Warriors provides a ready-made, easy to use climate education curriculum for young children (3-11 year olds) using a positive and empowering approach. We have two versions of the curriculum: 1. A high resource version for urban schools with access to technology & wifi 2. A low resource version for rural schools in remote areas. Ensuring all children can have access to our curriculum regardless of their background or geography is critical for us to ensure climate justice. We practice what we preach about sustainability: our curriculum is activity-based & uses recyclable items for our activities creating no new waste. Our lesson plans can be adapted to any local context and we highlight places to do so. Our lessons focus on empowering young children to take climate action in their local community and alleviating climate anxiety so children feel prepared for the future they will face.

How has it been spreading?

Earth Warriors is currently working across 6 different countries, has reached over 20,000 students and trained over 1000 teachers. We spent the first year developing our curriculum to be the most high quality that it can be: we had it peer reviewed by experts from Harvard and Stanford universities and has been designed by teachers for teachers. We have developed a full primary curriculum, a nursery curriculum, an after school eco club programme and 1 term taster programme. In the next 2-3 years, we aim to expand to 10 countries and reach over 1 million students to empower them to be Earth Warriors and take climate action in their local communities. We also plan to focus on Green Skills and Green Careers for students to embed sustainability into any career path they choose.

If I want to try it, what should I do?

We offer bespoke teacher training and curriculum programmes to help schools, nurseries and teacher training institutions contextualize and implement climate education in their settings. Anyone can get in touch with us, try our free pilot lessons and sign up for our newsletter through our website (https://earthwarriorsglobal.com/) or email us at hello@earthwarriorsglobal.com

Implementation steps

Choose Your Package & Subscribe
Schools can choose any of our subscription packages that suit their needs from our high-resource or low-resource curriculum options. These include our full year curriculum, 1 term taster, after school eco club and teacher training packages.
Attend an Induction Training
All of our packages include an induction teacher training to set teachers up for success to use our curriculum before they start. During the training we support teachers with content knowledge, outline our lessons in detail, the support we will provide throughout the year.
Student and Teacher Baseline Surveys
Before students and teachers start the programme, we ask them to take an age-appropriate baseline survey so we can measure our impact.
Implement the Programme
Schools and nurseries can then implement the programme with year round support from our curriculum team. We are always available to support with any questions through our Whatsapp group, Facebook group or email. Teachers can also join in our global community activities and events throughout the year such as our pen pal programme.
Student and Teacher Endline Surveys
Once the programme is complete, students and teachers take a short endline survey so we can understand what students have learned and how to improve the programme.
Renew Your Subscription or Try a New One
Schools can choose to renew their same subscription or try a new package if they like.
