Colet Mentoring

Free 1:1 academic support

Colet Mentoring builds on research showing the successful and positive impact of peer mentoring. Through the Colet Mentoring mobile app, students connect with student-mentors within the local and wider community of schools to get free academic support right when they need it. The initiative has been designed to be content agnostic – it can be deployed anywhere regardless of the national syllabus.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

EdTech company EasyA started Colet Mentoring with a focus of encouraging students to support one another. It was designed to provide students with free 1:1 academic support, all via an app, and was launched at the height of lockdown in Summer 2020, to help with learning loss and help students get support while outside of school settings.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

Colet Mentoring builds on research showing the successful and positive impact of peer mentoring and tutoring. The use of peer mentoring or teaching has been shown in research to have a large number of benefits, including reducing mathematics anxiety, supporting improved performance of students and improving learning outcomes of students.

The Colet Mentoring app is an innovative solution which links higher performing peers to those in lower grades or to lower performing peers. Mentees send a picture of a maths/science/language question they are struggling with in the app and they are matched with a mentor and enter a chat function where the mentees get 1-to-1 help from the mentor.

The app has stringent safeguarding measures in place. The quasi-anonymous, chat-based tutoring format is one of the safest forms of teaching available, with AI to process images sent for inappropriate content and automatically moderate them.

How has it been spreading?

We have over 70 schools on the system who have signed up. The total sessions currently stands at 1,998. The number of mentees signed up to the app is 912 and mentors 518.

Colet Mentoring is working closely with a secondary school in Juba, South Sudan and CGA Technologies to scale the project into South Sudan. This collaboration has linked mentors from a UK school with mentees in South Sudan, with very successful early results, and there are now plans to expand to more schools in South Sudan. There are opportunities for further expansion into different countries and schools, using the model of in-country mentoring arrangements, as well as cross-country arrangements.
